Over the years, we’ve all participated in the great debate trying to answer the question: which team is better, the Habs or the Leafs? Who is, was, and always will be superior? We want to know what your thoughts are on this question, which is why we proudly present the Habs/Leafs Essay Contest!

This is your chance to leave your mark on the debate and give your opinion on why you believe in your heart of hearts the Habs are better than the Leafs, or that the Leafs are better than the Habs. While we don’t expect you to forever settle the debate with an absolutely unrefutable answer, we want to see you put your best thoughts forward. Here are the criteria:

Maximum of 500 words.
Please be clear and concise with your writing. Begin with a strong statement that stakes out your position clearly and go from there.
Edit your work – we will factor spelling & grammar into the scoring. Because we respect that some fans may feel more comfortable writing in French, you can submit your essay in French.
Give strong supporting evidence to bolster your claims.

When you have completed your essay, please submit it to rmcadam@sportscardforum.com (rmcadam@sportscardforum.com) and send RGM81 a PM indicating that you have submitted your entry for the contest.

The SCF Hockey Team (plus RGM81 and Pheebs888, who are on the SCF Writing Team) will judge the essays, and the average scores will be used to determine a winner. Because there are a couple Habs & Leafs fans on the staff we realize that there may be some bias that comes into play – we will ask staffers to be as objective as possible in their evaluations. You will be judged primarily on the merits and quality of your argument, not whether we agree with you.

Scoring for the Essay Contest will be as follows
1st Place: 15 Points
2nd Place: 10 Points
3rd Place: 5 Points
4th Place: 3 Points
5th Place: 1 Point

These include trades or sales but not CC transactions (in other words, any deal must be feedback-eligible for both parties), and cannot be used for other contests being run on the site. Any trade started between December 1 and December 31st is eligible.

Damnit, I'm way late ... good luck everyone.

I had a story about how I started collecting cards after seeing a Habs game with my dad as a kid. I won a pool on the bus by guessing the score right (from Ottawa - before the sens had a team) and spent my $30 on a few packs of proset at the old forum. I've been addicted every since!

But now I'm a sens fan, so I clearly don't desire to win this contest at all.

The staff have had the opportunity to vote and this month's winner is xelloss1012! Here is his winning submission!

While the Maple Leafs are a famed team, the Canadiens will always be legendary with their storied history and powerful fanbase. Even in the modern-day NHL, Canadiens fans are found in just about every NHL arena during all games they play with the well-known Olé chant. Due to the number of Stanley Cups they have won over the years, they have been compared to the New York Yankees of the MLB.

During the late part of the Depression, even Conn Smythe aided the Habs by engineering Dick Irvin's hiring as coach of the team. Even Smythe knew that without the Canadiens, the NHL would not survive.

Despite the Leafs run of success throughout the 1940's, it still does not rival the two Stanley Cup dynasties of 1955-60 and 1975-79 that the Canadiens put together. This is all in part to management by Frank Selke and Sam Pollock, while Hector ‘Toe’ Blake and Scotty Bowman did a great job of coaching the team.

Although the Leafs have won 13 Cups and five divisional championships over their history, they have missed the playoffs 30 times since 1917. The Canadiens since 1917 have won 23 Cups, eight conference championships, and 22 divisional championships while only missing the playoffs 14 times (three of those before there were four teams consistently playing in 1924 within the NHL). The Maple Leafs have never been to the Stanley Cup Final since the last days of the Original Six (pre-expansion) era, which is currently the longest-running Stanley Cup drought. This has been partially attributed to the poor management of the team during the Harold Ballard years and the loss of many of their prominent players during that time.

Furthermore, Maple Leafs management also traded away draft picks and young prospects for veteran players since Ballard’s time. An example of this was in March 1996, when the Leafs acquired Wendel Clark and Matthieu Schneider as part of a larger trade with the Islanders while forfeiting their 1997 first round pick, which ended up being Roberto Luongo. In 2006, Toronto traded Tuukka Rask (their 2005 first round draft pick) to the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft. Rask has been a solid backup to Tim Thomas in Boston for the last few years while Raycroft barely lasted more than a season in Toronto. In 2009, Toronto acquired Phil Kessel for their draft picks in the first and second rounds of 2010 and the first round of 2011 to Boston. Currently the 2010 pick, Tyler Seguin is amongst the top offense of the Bruins and won a Stanley Cup last season. It still remains to be seen if the other two picks, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight will pan out for Boston.

Overall, the track record of the Canadiens since the formation of the NHL has shown to be more prominently illustrious than the Maple Leafs in the record books and with more-notably famed players like Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard and Patrick Roy.

Very nicely written!
