The eyesight of patients deemed officially blind improved only four months after an experimental treatment using embryo stem cells, claim scientists.

Early ground-breaking results from an international trial offer hope for millions with progressive conditions that end in sight loss.

The treatment involves injecting embryo stem cells into the eye in an effort to replace damaged cells in the retina the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

The aim of the trial is to test the safety of the operation in those who are already severely sight-impaired, and cannot expect their vision to be restored.

But two U.S. patients described as 'legally blind' one old and one middle-aged have shown signs of improved sight four months after receiving the implants.
