View Full Version : IMS Community Day

Today I went to IMS for the Community Day celebration. For $10, you get virtually all access to the track. I got the chance to tour the garages, go to the IMS museum (included with the day's admission), and to tour the grounds. But the big thing is the autograph sessions during the day.

The first session was at the museum for 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones. His racing collection, including the three cars that won the 500 from either him as a driver or owner was acquired by IMS. I got the pamphlet they gave to attendees and a game piece for the 1968 American Oil set signed by him.

The next signing was at the Penske souvenir hauler. The three Penske drivers (Ryan Briscoe, Will Power, and Helio Castroneves) did a signing today for 100 fans at the hauler. They didn't have hero cards there, so I picked up a three photo set for each of them to sign.

Next came the big one...the full field signing. They did the signing in three groups of eleven, trying to keep teams together. They did change the format though; instead of one long table, they broke up the groups into 5 smaller groups of 2-3 drivers in the session. They had 800 wristbands available for each signing...YIKES!!! They also tried to keep as many teams as possible together for the signing.

Here is the blow-by-blow account:

First wave: I got 8/11 drivers. I got my Dario Franchitti and JR Hildebrand diecasts signed along with 8 hero cards (Dario, JR, Scott Dixon, Katherine Legge, Simona de Silvestro, Oriol Servia, Jean Alesi and Alex Tagliani). the drivers I missed were Michel Jourdain, Takumo Sato, and EJ Viso.

Second Wave: I got 9/11 drivers and all them were hero cards: Ed Carpenter, Justin Wilson, Ana Beatriz, James Hinchcliffe, Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter Reay, Sebastain Saavedra, Wade Cunningham and Ryan Briscoe. The only drivers missed were Will Power and Helio Castroneves, but since I got them at the hauler, no small loss.

Third Wave: I got 9/11 drivers again. The signed hero cards were Sebastien Bourdais, Simon Pagenaud, James Jakes, Mike Conway, Josef Newgarden, Bryan Clauson (he also signed his card from my 2008 Speedway as well), Charlie Kimball, Graham Rahal and Townsend Bell. Only drivers I missed were Tony Kanaan and Rubens Barrichello, but with good reason; with everyone going to their line first (the biggest name rookie and the most loved driver in the paddock) they cut off the line for them in 15 minutes!!! But I went in that line that I knew that it would either be just those two drivers or getting the other nine.

I will post pics of my booty later...I am as red as my Dario shirt!!!

Thanks for reading, Alex

I got few requests for handouts pics...here we go.

Best handouts this year (hands down) go to Dixon and Franchitti of TCGR:

Three rookies of the 500 this year: Josef Newgarden, Bryan Clayson (a few of you may remember him a few years back in NASCAR circles) and Jean Alesi:

Even though I only had one of the three Penske driver's signed handouts, here it is: Ryan Briscoe.

The Andretti Autosport signed handouts: Saavedra, Hinchcliffe, Beatriz on the top row; Hunter-Reay and Andretti on the bottom row.

I didn't get Barrichello, but I did get the next biggest name off my "don't have his autograph yet" list and his teammate; Dragon Racing's Sebastien Bourdais and Katherine Legge.

Notice that the Bourdais/Legge handouts have the Chevy bowtie on the card; the three teams that had Lotus engines (Dragon was one of them) had new handouts available with their new engine sponsors.

And here is the pic of me and Parnelli at the museum:

Thanks for the praise, Alex
