View Full Version : Politics and Religion forum closes on July 1st

Lastly, on July 1st the Politics & Religion forum will be closing. It's been here a long time as the site owner was into those types of topics. While there had been talks in the past about closing the forum, they had went by the wayside. I feel that as a sports card buy/trade/sell/discussion forum on sports and sports cards that it's time to relinquish the P&R forum from SCF. I know it's popular, and I know some will be upset by it's closing while others will be happy. In the end I feel it's what's best for SCF.

This site can do whatever it pleases...

I think that it's a bad move seeing as there will ALWAYS be something religious or political to talk about but that's my opinion.

I have several other places where I go to talk about these things....but admittedly, I think this was the only place where the majority was both religious AND non-liberal which is in direct conflict with how I perceive religion and politics.

Ironically, I liked that because I really got to see how the "other side" thinks.....and I always want to keep my mind open.

I guess when P&R closes that will do it for me with this website which is kinda sad, but like I said, I've got other places.

I blame IMac because he doesn't come here anymore.
Where am I going to watch bat poop crazy people on both sides of the spectrum continually bang their heads into the wall?

Seems like a bad move to me. I never got the idea of "this is a sports card site so why would you have this forum." I haven't been on in a while, but the P&R forum is really the only reason I come to this site... that and the garage sale finds post. My activity on the site will be very low if at all with this forum closing.

Are they planning to get rid of all of the non sports related forums?

I guess monitoring the forum might be a factor, but seems like a bad idea to close a forum that gets quite a few posts on a daily basis. Although I have no idea where it ranks on the sites most hit forums. Would be interesting to know.

The forum is closing because certain high ranking staff do not want to "waste their time" with non sport issues.
Like usual, a few bad apples ruin it for everyone.
This is the most active chat area in the forum by far and generates numerous threads and posts.
I was offered another position, but I will be leaving, no need to stay some place that I can't agree on policy or practices.

Hopefully we can all meet up some place else and continue our debates, arguments, likes and dislikes of each other.

Terrible Idea. This forum was the main reason I keep coming to SCF. I guess it was nice knowing ya SCF!

Seems like a terrible decision to shut it down if it is one of the most active forums on the site. You'd think they would want to have as much traffic as possible for their ad rates. The stance of not wanting a well rounded message board that can push outside of the sports realm seems rather narrow minded. I'm not sure what all goes into running a message board such as this but does the P&R really cost that much more effort and time to run than the rest of the forums?

I gravitated towards this forum years ago and that's really the only reason I even stop by anymore. To me these topics are much more interesting than chatting about who the top 5 all time QBs. I'm not sure how many members visit the P&R forum but seems like a lot of people's activity will slow once they shut it down.

Will the chit chat forum go away as well? Seems like people could post there... or will they be deleting any sort of politics, religious, or current events type of posts no matter what?

It has been fun but I will remain on here as it is still one of the best card trading sites out there. And I guess that was my main reason I just stumbled into P and R. But there is plenty of forums out there for you crazies to rant on. ANd I say that in a joking way so don't be so serious.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. No, we should go out with a bang in the 27 days that we have left.

Dexter Lake Club anyone?

Maybe we should continue the discussion at IMAC's booth at the National?

Maybe we could start some sort of Fan Club on Facebook where we can discuss things like P&R.

It sucks to see all you guys go as a lot of you don't post on other places on this forum so it looks like it will be the end in about a month. Too bad because it was a blast. Either entertaining, funny, or something that was thought provoking almost every time. Probably the worst part is missing out on the 2016 election. One side has to lose and the meltdowns here would have been hysterical.

anyone have the original thread with this announcement?

No thread. It was in the June newsletter that I would assume gets PMed to everyone. At the very bottom of the PM it stated what I posted in the quote.

I agree with the going out with a bang part but I don't recall the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor :/

37jetson, watch the movies TORA,TORA,TORA or Pearl Harbor and you'll definitely find out that the Germans had nothing to do with the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

I guess at this point if I get in trouble for "spamming" it won't matter as with the closing of P&R I won't have any reason to come back to SCF now that I have quit the card hobby.

About 2 years ago when I was AGM this issue of closing the P&R became a subject of discussion within the staff area. I proposed that a political discussion forum that I had created be treated as a sister site to SCF where any political discussion here would be directed to my forum and any sports related talk at my forum would be directed to SCF via hyperlinks. After 6 months of asking if this was something Mike would want to do without ever getting an answer I gave up trying. My time invested in AGM here had prevented me from properly investing time in my own forum and the investment of hundreds of dollars out of my own pocket for a domain name, site hosting and software/app purchases made it illogical to continue on. So I let the domain expire and forgot about it.

Then a month or so ago it came to my attention that P&R was probably going to close. I checked and my old domain has been purchased, so that option is out. Instead I started another forum, which is currently a work in progress, just for the purpose of political discussion. If anyone wants to join there, it is free, of course. Everyone, regardless of political affiliation or opinion is welcome. The rules there are much more relaxed than they are here, all I ask is that no porn be posted and the flaming stay to a minimum. The address is XXXXXXXXX NAME CHANGE! I bought a domain name. The new address is http://politicsandreligionforum.com

If after some time I see that it is worth it I will go ahead and purchase a full domain name and perform some software upgrades and add to it, but for now I need to see that there is enough interest in it before I will go that route.

I will say one more thing....

Even though I DO have other places that I frequent and can talk about P&R.....I have seen the bright side about going to a place where many people believe the things I usually oppose.

Believe it or not, I have changed my mind about guns at least a LITTLE BIT....due to this website.

I'm sure if you go back to the first time I made a post about guns on this forum it was the far left position that we should either BAN Guns or restrict them very tightly.

I no longer believe that.

I have read many studies and many opinions of people including the ones from this forum....and I have completely changed my mind on that.

Not only do I now fully support American citizens owning guns, in some way I encourage it!

At the end of the day, I believe people should live free to do as they please as long as they do not infringe the rights of others....but one has to protect themselves if necessary.

AND NO....the Cops will NOT protect you if an invader came into your house.

YOU have to protect yourself and your family.

That's another reason why I liked it as well. You got a mix of people's views and opinions from not only all around the country but around the world. You could debate, ask questions and get a personal view with the opinion rather than just hearing something on TV and being done with it. Most of the time it never changed my views but some of the time it did. Getting a POV you really didn't look at before and going back and forth with the person you could learn something new that would alter your way of thinking because you realized the new way of thinking was better than what you previously thought.

Actually that tavern is set to close at the end of the month. Guess they were tired of all the activity they were getting.

That's pretty sad. This is the main reason I still visit this site. Haven't been active in trading or sports talk for awhile, so I guess I won't have reason to come on this site anymore. I posted on this forum a ton when I was still in high school, and it was awesome to see other peoples strong opinions, and why they had them. It also made me question my own beliefs and made me study many things to see if I was actually right to believe what I did. This forum will be missed.

There are many other forums out there that deal with Politics and Religion. I think you will find that they have more opinions and more traffic because it is geared for P and R

Well the trolls part has kind of happened on here too. DOn't mean the be the minority but just not a fan of folks who don't trade AT ALL and are on here for P and R only. My opinion only but I am at peace with it.

As a person who has fully immersed himself with these topics online, I can definitely say a few things on the matter of P&R forums...

Most of them do ultimately fail for the very reason that it is SO divisive.

I personally was once banned from a website for doing nothing more than exercising free speech on the subject of P&R....albeit, free speech that unfortunately offended a particular person, and if you're wondering, no...it wasn't religion, believe it or not it was on the subject of rape.

Anyways, P&R are also the two topics people can't resist but talk about....it is so ingrained in our consciousness and even in websites where it is disallowed to talk P&R, it will always come out, one way or another.

In fact, making it unavailable to talk about, just makes people want to talk about it MORE....

A good point as it is something that can't be helped being discussed. Just now it can be discussed on another P and R board and all of us who want to discuss it can meet up there. This great site can carry on and will still flourish as a SPorts card site.
