Today in Nascar History March 1st:

Winners on this date: Curtis Turner, James Hylton, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, Mark Martin, and Kyle Busch.

March 1st, 1970: James Hylton holds off Richard Petty to score a win for the underdogs in the Richmond 500. It is his first career Cup Series victory.


March 1st, 1981: Darrell Waltrip drives his #11 Junior Johnson owned car to victory in the Carolina 500 at Rockingham. In his first 4 starts for his new team, Waltrip has 2 victories.


March 1st, 1998: Mark Martin beats his Ford teammate Jeff Burton to the line to win the inaugural race at the brand new Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It is also the first win for the Ford Taurus brand in Nascar.


March 1st, 2009: Kyle Busch passes Clint Bowyer in the late going and goes on to score a popular hometown win at Las Vegas.

Today in Nascar History March 3rd:

Winners on this date: Jack Smith, Richard Petty, Neil Bonnett, Kyle Petty, Jeff Gordon, Sterling Marlin, and Carl Edwards.

March 3rd, 1991: Kyle Petty comes from a lap down early to lead 380 of the 500 laps and takes a dominating win in the 500 lapper at Rockingham.


March 3rd, 2013: Carl Edwards ends a 70 race winless drought by holding off Jimmie Johnson on a late race restart to win at Phoenix. It is Edwards’ 20th career win and his 2nd at PIR and also the first for the Ford Fusion Generation 6 racecar.

Today in Nascar History March 4th:

Winners on this date: Billy Myers, Cotton Owens, Joe Weatherly, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison (2 times), Kyle Petty, Jeff Gordon, and Denny Hamlin.

March 4th, 2012: Denny Hamlin holds off Kevin Harvick as the 2nd place driver runs out of fuel on the last lap to score the victory at Phoenix. It is Hamlin's first win with new crew chief Darian Grubb and it comes in only the pairing's 2nd start.

Today in Nascar History March 5th:

Winners on this date: Rex White, Richard Petty, AJ Foyt, David Pearson, Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Jeff Burton, and Brad Keselowski.

March 5th, 1972: AJ Foyt dominates and wins the 2nd annual 500 mile race at the Ontario Speedway in California. The 2nd half of the event is shown on ABC Sports, drawing a 12.3 rating for the last half hour.


March 5th, 1978: David Pearson passes Benny Parsons late in the going to win the Carolina 500 at Rockingham. It is the 100th win of the Silver Foxes' career.


March 5th, 2011: As Mark Martin wins at Las Vegas and takes his 49th career checkered flag in the Nationwide Series, Danica Patrick makes history by finishing 4th in the event, the highest a female has ever finished in any of Nascar's top 3 divisions (previously the best had been a 5th place by Sara Christian in a 1949 event).


March 5th, 2017: Kevin Harvick dominates the field at Atlanta but speeds down pit road on the final stop of the day leaving Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson to battle for the victory. Keselowski prevails to take his first win at the Georgia track.

Today in Nascar History March 6th:

Winners on this date: Richard Petty, Neil Bonnett, Ernie Irvan, Carl Edwards, and Brad Keselowski.

March 6th, 1988: Neil Bonnett wins at Rockingham after starting in the 30th position. It is Bonnett's 2nd straight Cup Series win. The top 4 finishers in the event all are on Hoosier Tires.


March 6th, 2011: Carl Edwards take advantage of Tony Stewart's pit miscue and subsequent alternating strategy to take the lead off of the final pit stop and hold off a charging Stewart for the win at Las Vegas. Stewart leads for most of the event but it is Edwards who takes his 2nd career victory at the Nevada track.


March 6th, 2016: Brad Keselowski wrestles the lead away from Kyle Busch late in the going to win at Las Vegas on a wild weather day in the desert. Drivers battle rain, sandstorms, and huge winds throughout the event. The win is Keselowski's 2nd in 3 years at the Nevada track and it breaks a 33 race dry spell for the driver of the #2.

Today in Nascar History March 7th:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Junior Johnson, Richard Petty, Dave Marcis, Davey Allison, Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, and Kurt Busch.

March 7th, 1935: Sir Malcolm Campbell drives his Bluebird to a record 276.82 speed run on the sands of Daytona Beach. It brings to a close speed trials on Daytona Beach for good.


March 7th, 1993: Davey Allison scores an easy victory at Richmond. It would be the final victory of his career.


March 7th, 1999: In a battle of Burton brothers, Jeff prevails over Ward and passes him with 10 laps to go to win the 2nd annual race at Las Vegas.


March 7th, 2004: Matt Kenseth backs up his 2003 triumph at Las Vegas by repeating and taking the checkers again in the 2004 version.


March 7th, 2010: Kurt Busch survives 2 Green White Checker restarts in a wild race to win for the 2nd straight year at Atlanta. Carl Edwards tests Nascar’s new “have at it boys” policy when he intentionally wrecks 6th place Brad Keselowski late in the race in retaliation for an earlier accident. Keselowski's car goes airborne in a spectacular crash. Luckily he emerges unhurt. Edwards is parked for the remainder of the event.



March 7th, 2013: Denny Hamlin is fined 25,000 by Nascar for his comments about the new Gen 6 racecar after the Phoenix event. An angry Hamlin vows not to pay the fine and dares the sanctioning body to suspend him.

Today in Nascar History March 8th:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, and Kurt Busch.

March 8th, 1936: The city of Daytona Beach conducts a 240 mile late model stock car race in replacement of the now vacant Daytona Beach Speed Trials. Milt Marion wins the race while a young Bill France finishes 5th.


March 8th, 1987: Dale Earnhardt drives his car to the win at Richmond, his 22nd career victory.


March 8th, 2009: Kurt Busch dominates at Atlanta and passes Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards on a late race restart to claim the win.

Winners on this date: David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte (2 times), and Kyle Busch.

March 9th, 1997: Dale Jarrett dominates the 500 mile race in Atlanta, winning easily. Ernie Irvan finishes 2nd giving the RYR cars a 1-2 finish. Late in the event Steve Grissom survives a spectacular crash on the backstretch.

March 9th, 2008: Kyle Busch dominates the 2nd half of the event at Atlanta and holds on to score the first win for Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series. It is also Kyle's 1st win since joining Joe Gibbs Racing.

Today in Nascar History March 10th:

Winners on this date: Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt, Tony Stewart, and Matt Kenseth.

March 10th, 1940: A 160 mile race is held on the Daytona Beach Road Course. Well known moonshiner Rapid Roy Hall wins in his 1939 Ford.


March 10th, 2013: Matt Kenseth becomes only the 3rd driver to win on his birthday by claiming the win in a spirited duel with Kasey Kahne in Las Vegas. The win is the first for the Toyota Gen 6 racecar and Kenseth’s 3rd
Las Vegas victory. It is also his first for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Winners on this date: Fireball Roberts, Bobby Isaac, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jimmie Johnson, and Martin Truex Jr.

March 12th, 2000: Dale Earnhardt beats Bobby Labonte to the line in a thrilling photo finish to win at Atlanta. It is The Intimidator's 75th career win.



March 12th, 2006: Jimmie Johnson passes Matt Kenseth on the final lap and outruns him in a race to the line to win at Las Vegas.


March 12th, 2017: Brad Keselowski is on his way to his 2nd straight win before a part fails in his right front with only 2 laps to go opening the door for Martin Truex Jr. to take victory at Las Vegas. The win is the first for the new Toyota bodystyle and the first time a driver sweeps all 3 stages of a race in Nascar's new format. Fireworks also erupt on the last lap and post race as Joey Logano and Kyle Busch make contact in the final corner which sends Busch spinning-after the race the two fight on pit road leaving Busch with a cut after the brief fracas.

Winners on this date: Paul Goldsmith, Richard Petty (2 times), Ernie Irvan, Jimmie Johnson, and Kevin Harvick.

March 13th, 1983: Richard Petty holds off Bill Elliott to win the Carolina 500 at Rockingham. The win breaks a 43 race winless drought for Petty and it is the 196th win of his illustrious career.


March 13th, 2005: Jimmie Johnson cruises his way to victory at Las Vegas.


March 13th, 2016: Kevin Harvick beats Carl Edwards to the line by .010 in a photo finish at Phoenix to take his 8th win at the Arizona track. The fender rubbing duel is the closest finish in the track's history.

Today in Nascar History March 16th:

Winners on this date: Marshall Teague, Lee Petty, David Pearson, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Morgan Shepherd, Ricky Craven, and Jeff Burton.

March 16th, 1980: Dale Earnhardt holds off rookie Rusty Wallace to take the win in Atlanta. It is the first superspeedway victory for Earnhardt.



March 16th, 1986: Morgan Shepherd holds off Dale Earnhardt and wins at Atlanta in an unsponsored car. It is Shepherd's 2nd career Cup victory.


March 16th, 2003: In what many consider one of the greatest races in Nascar history, Ricky Craven beats Kurt Busch at Darlington in an amazing late race duel and to the line in a photo finish. The .002 margin of victory is tied for the closest in Nascar history to this day.




March 16th, 2008: Jeff Burton takes advantage of Joe Gibbs racing's misfortunes to take the win at Bristol. Burton is 4th with a few laps to go but Kevin Harvick spins Tony Stewart, allowing Burton to take 2nd, and when Denny Hamlin has fuel pickup problems on the restart, Burton is there again to take advantage for the win.

Today in Nascar History March 17th:

Winners on this date: Ralph Moody, Jack Smith, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Bill Elliott, Sterling Marlin, and Kasey Kahne.

March 17th, 1985: Bill Elliott beats Geoff Bodine to win at Atlanta despite racing with a broken leg suffered in a crash at Rockingham 2 weeks earlier.


March 17th, 2002: Sterling Marlin wins a wild race at Darlington as many crashes mar the event. Steve Park crashes early in his 1st start back from severe injuries, and Tony Stewart takes a trip to the hospital after crashing while leading late in the race.


March 17th, 2013: Kasey Kahne pulls away late in a typically wild event at Bristol to score his first career victory at the Tennessee short track.

Today in Nascar History March 18th:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Rex White, David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Jimmie Johnson, and Brad Keselowski.

March 18th, 1979: Buddy Baker overpowers the field to win at Atlanta. It is his first win in nearly 3 years.

March 18th, 1984: Benny Parsons wins at Atlanta by outrunning Dale Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough. It is BP's 21st career victory.


March 18th, 2007: Jimmie Johnson out-duels the other home improvement car driven by Tony Stewart and wins the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta.


March 18th, 2012: Brad Keselowski outruns Matt Kenseth and dominates the 2nd half of the event to take his 2nd straight victory at Bristol. Many of the top contenders are eliminated in an early 5 car pile-up.

Today in Nascar History March 19th:

Winners on this date: David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Ward Burton, Kasey Kahne, and Ryan Newman.

March 19th, 2000: Ward Burton beats Dale Jarrett to the line at Darlington to end a 5 year winless drought. It is the 2nd victory of Ward's Cup Career.


March 19th, 2006: Kasey Kahne starts from the pole and dominates en route to an easy win in the rain delayed race at Atlanta.



March 19th, 2017: Ryan Newman stays out under a late yellow and holds off the dominant cars of the day in Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson to score an upset win in Phoenix on a sweltering 95 degree day in the desert. The win breaks a 127 race winless drought for Newman and snaps a long one for RCR.

Today in Nascar History March 20th:

Winners on this date: Dick Hutcherson, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Morgan Shepherd, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, and Jimmie Johnson.

March 20th, 1966: Dick Hutcherson wins the 500 lapper at Bristol by 4 laps in a crash riddled race. Only 7 cars finish of the 32 that started.


March 20th, 1993: Morgan Shepherd passes rookie Jeff Gordon late in the going as he runs short on gas to take the win in the race at Atlanta. The race is run a week later than scheduled due to a huge snowstorm.


March 20th, 2005: Rookie Carl Edwards becomes the first driver to complete the weekend sweep at Atlanta Motor Speedway by taking his first career Cup Series win in dramatic fashion. Edwards, who had won his first Busch Series race the day before, makes a last lap pass of Jimmie Johnson coming out of turn 4 and beats him to the start finish line to win the event.




March 20th, 2011: Kyle Busch continues his dominance of Bristol, sweeping the weekend for the 2nd straight time at the track. Busch holds off rivals Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson in a late 3 car battle to win a relatively tame race at Bristol.



March 20th, 2016: In a slip and slide affair at California, Jimmie Johnson passes the dominant car of the day in Kevin Harvick on a late race restart to win in his home state. It is Johnson's 77th career win, surpassing Dale Earnhardt Sr. on the all-time wins list.

Today in Nascar History March 21st:

Winners on this date: Herb Thomas, Richard Petty, David Pearson, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Burton, and Jimmie Johnson (2 times).

March 21st, 1999: Jeff Burton becomes perhaps the luckiest and most bizarre winner in Nascar history after the 400 miler at Darlington is called on lap 163 due to a thunderstorm. As the rains start falling leader Burton gets involved in a big melee on the frontstretch destroying his car. Burton limps around with the mangled heap under caution in the lead and is in the same position when the race is called under the red, giving him the ultimate rain gift victory.


March 21st, 2010: Jimmie Johnson takes advantage of a late race restart to get past the dominant car of the day in Kurt Busch and takes the checkers at Bristol for the first time in his career. Along with it being JJ's 3rd win in the first 5 races of 2010, it is his 50th career win, tying him with Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson on the all-time win list.

Winners on this date: Johnny Beauchamp, Fred Lorenzen, Dale Jarrett, and Kyle Busch.

March 22nd, 2009: Kyle Busch dominates at Bristol and scores a relatively easy victory. It is the 3rd straight event in 2009 that a Busch brother has gone to victory lane.

March 23rd, 2003: Young gun Kurt Busch continues his Bristol dominance and repeats as the winner of the Spring race at Bristol in dominating fashion.

Today in Nascar History March 24th:

Winners on this date: Buck Baker, Junior Johnson, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Busch.

March 24th, 1970: Buddy Baker becomes the first man to break 200 mph in a stock car on a closed course during a Goodyear tire test at Talladega.


March 24th, 2002: Young gun Kurt Busch scores his 1st career win in controversial fashion as he muscles Jimmy Spencer out of the lead late in the going to take the checkers at Bristol.


March 24th, 2013: In a spectacular and wild race at Auto Club Speedway Kyle Busch scores the first victory for Toyota at the facility and completes a sweep of the weekend. Busch’s 25th career win happens largely due to the last lap duel between newfound rivals Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, who end up wrecking eachother in a wild melee out of turn 4 on the final lap which sends Hamlin to the hospital. Logano also draws the ire of Tony Stewart who goes after him post race much to the delight of the California fans.

Today in Nascar History March 25th:

Winners on this date: Buck Baker, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Elliott Sadler, Kyle Busch, and Tony Stewart.

March 25th, 1973: Cale Yarborough drives his #11 Chevy to a crushing victory at Bristol. Cale destroys the competition, leading all 500 laps of the event.


March 25th, 2001: Young gun Elliott Sadler uses brilliant strategy and holds off John Andretti for the win at Bristol in a classic old school battle of #21 vs. #43. Sadler comes from 38th on the grid and it is his 1st career Cup Series win. It is also the first win for the Wood Brothers since 1993.


March 25th, 2007: Kyle Busch holds off Jeff Burton to win at Bristol. It is the first race for Nascar's brand new Car of Tomorrow or COT racecar, a car with more safety features and a wing on the back instead of a spoiler. Busch says they suck in victory lane.


March 25th, 2012: Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch set a blistering pace at Fontana and Stewart outraces the rain to claim his 2nd win of the year and his 2nd at the track. The race is rain shortened at 129 laps and its only caution is for the rain shower.

Today in Nascar History March 26th:

Winners on this date: Fonty Flock, Bob Burdick, Bobby Allison, Rusty Wallace (2 times), Sterling Marlin, Kurt Busch, and Kyle Larson.

March 26th, 1955: Fonty Flock takes the victory in the 100 mile event at Columbia, SC. He drives a Chevrolet to victory, the first for the nameplate in Nascar's main series.


March 26th, 1961: Relative unknown driver Bob Burdick surprises everyone by winning at Atlanta. It is the young driver's first career win.


March 26th, 1972: Bobby Allison drives to victory in the Atlanta 500. It is the first superspeedway win for the Chevy nameplate since 1963.


March 26th, 2006: Kurt Busch scores another win at Bristol after bumping Matt Kenseth out of the way late in the going. It is Busch's first victory for new car owner Roger Penske.


March 26th, 2013: Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing announce that the driver will miss at least six weeks after suffering a compression fracture in his back during his last lap accident at California Speedway. Hamlin's consecutive start streak comes to an end at 264.


March 26th, 2017: Kyle Larson starts from the pole and holds off the field on a plethora of late race restarts to score the win at Auto Club Speedway. Larson sweeps the weekend having won the Xfinity race Saturday and his 2nd career Cup Series win comes on the heels of 3 consecutive 2nd place finishes for the red hot driver.

March 28th, 1993: Dale Earnhardt wins at Darlington, ending a 10 month winless streak. Alan Kulwicki finishes 6th in what is to be the last race of his career.


March 28th, 1999: Terry Labonte holds off Dale Jarrett to take a popular home state victory at the Texas Motor Speedway.


March 28th, 2004: Kurt Busch holds onto the lead through a few late race restarts and avoids the carnage to score another Bristol victory.

March 29th, 2010: Denny Hamlin comes from 8th to 1st in a crazy final 5 laps at Martinsville to win his 3rd career race at the paperclip. Hamlin comes in to pit with 9 laps to go while leading and the rest of the leaders stay out, but when Matt Kenseth hits Jeff Gordon on the Green White Checker restart, Hamlin and JGR teammate Joey Logano take advantage-scoring a 1-2 finish.
