View Full Version : You think I will ever get there or am I wasting my time?

I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do with my collection, as I am getting older I am looking to get out of collecting basketball in general and focusing on Jordans only.

My thought is this, I have $2,000 worth of base/inserts. I have been able to trade up for #d cards and etc, I am looking to keep doing this until I have nothing but good cards left, then trade up for GU and then maybe trade up for Autos (this is rare though, not many ppl do this). I realize this is a lengthy process and not everyone would trade up like this, but I have already cut down 1,000 cards from my collection and kept the value the same. Do you think I am continue to do this, I would eventually like to sell the few cards left to get a Jordan Star Rookie. That would be my ultimate goal. or do you think I should just sell my whole collection as is now and stop wasting my time with trades like this?

what you think?
Sorry for the long read...

No one said collecting was easy; those of us who don't have $4901836139834786 to spend on exquisites need to work their way up the ladder. I say keep doing what you're doing and don't get discouraged...

If you are determined enough I would say keep going. Good luck if you do!

Thanks for the encouragment guys... a few people have voted sell now, but no explanations... I guess they just don't like me and want me out of the hobby, LOL ....

Leaves more Jordans for the rest of us, lol

ABSOLUTELY keep going!!! I am a Patrick Ewing collector, and I have to get probably 10% of what you will need for a master collection, but his is what makes collecting still worth it for me. My son one day will get these, and Ewing might not be worth 1% what Jordan is, but its not always about $$$$, but the fun in collecting. When I was 10-12 and first started collecting, there was no Beckett, well there was, but not to us kids. We tried to get the players we wanted for our colelction not for money, but for the bragging rights. Collecting always needs to be fun, or else it might as well be the stock market. Sorry for getting long, but I will always keep going until my goal in finished, hopefully you'll do the same.

the only thing with making a lot of small trades is the cost of shipping. this is money you could otherwise use to buy jordans you need/want. trading is always fun though, so i think either way you go, just stick with it and enjoy.

That would be reason enough for me Alex ;) j/k!!!

I say keep going, this afterall is a hobby and meant to be fun and not stagnent, so keep going

this really made me chuckle..as a low-end collector here who probably won't ever be more than a junior college prof in the liberal arts world of English, I can relate :)

I would never stop collecting Jordans, that's whats fun for me, I love even getting base of him, when I get them I put them in individual top loaders and scan them, that's my passion, what I don't like is the base I have amounted from opening packs (looking for Jordans).

I don't want you to think I am in it for the money cause I am not, I just want to get the best Jordan card(s) in return for my non-jordan collection, so that's why i was considering selling it for cash to buy MJ's, but it's always more fun to trade, then to sell IMO. Thanks for the support and best of luck with the Ewing collection, I know how hard it can be to collect a star player.. :)

soccershane: you are right that's one of my driving factors to maybe quit and sell my whole non-jordan collection on ebay and get a really nice MJ auto or something.... shipping is killer..

mattyj: thanks buddy for your sarcastic support... LOL... jk, i know what you mean, and it is fun, especially when i get trades like the one we just did, those help me out but I rarely get those types of trades...not many low end traders left like us, everybody wants equisite and etc...

I know you can relate, we go way back, when there were no GU let alone autos or exquisites... LOL

Movel, I have a bunch of early 90s Jordan cards I'm trying to get rid of. You want 'em?

02-27-2007, 01:06 AM
gatorboymike, I have the majority of the base from the 90s but depending on what you want in return I could use duplicates. PLMK Thanks

I'd say sell

Trading (especially trading up) is by and large a big waste of time in terms of gaining value (it's usually more a struggle to stay even)

That said, sell your cards and you'll have the resources to get the card you do need and you'll get it MUCH faster

As you said, trading up only goes so far, and it sounds to me like the cards you really want are beyond the realm of trading up

movel, what I'd want is Jordan's Slam Dunk and All Star cards (with roman numerals on the back) from '91 Hoops. That was one of the first sets I ever collected but I never got those two cards.

02-27-2007, 06:41 PM
hey gatorboymike, I have those cards both of them but they are part of my Jordan collection, I don't have any duplicates to trade. Sorry.

tradebark: Thanks for the opinion, I guess you have a point too, it might be out of the realm of just "trading up"

02-27-2007, 07:52 PM
in my opinion... there are two ways of looking at it... for me i would say sell... you could take the money you make off the inserts and stuff and use it to buy jordans... which is easier than trading for them... there are always a million jordans for sale on ebay while at the forum there may only be a couple you dont have for trade... i basically just sold my entire collection for that reason... i had a ton of inserts that werent going anywhere and i have taken the money and bought some really nice stuff off ebay

Just keep on going!
