The NFL's Breast Cancer Awareness effort will send plenty of game-used and game-worn items to auction later this month.

It looked a little strange. Quarterbacks wearing pink shoes, big defensive linemen adjusting their pink wristbands and gloves and coaches wearing caps that sported pink bills.

But it was all for a good cause.

The NFL's month-long breast cancer awareness program brought hundreds of pink-themed items to the field, many of which will be sold on the NFL's auction site. The first items, most of which will be autographed, will show up the week of October 14th according to a Twitter post from NFL public relations executive Brian McCarthy. Curiously, the NFL blew a chance to clue fans in to the auction by keeping it fairly low key in the days beforehand and not offering much information regarding the planned auction. Collectors, charity-minded fans and others were curious in online posts throughout Sunday.

Nearly everything will find its way to the auction block, according to the NFL, including the game-worn pink cleats, wristbands, gloves, footballs with pink stripes, towels and even special pink-colored coins used for the pre-game toss. The league promises that "proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and team charities". The pink theme will continue through this month, with more items expected to be added to the auction.
Major League Baseball has been conducting breast cancer awareness events during each of the last several Mother's Day games with pink bats and other items sold on line as a fundraiser.
