An Important Anniversary

By Karine Hains, Editor-In-Chief

Of all the franchises in professional sports history, only one will celebrate its 100th anniversary in the 2008-2009 season. Which one? ” Les Habitants”, “Les Glorieux”, “La Sainte Flanelle” yes I am referring to the Montreal Canadiens. Founded on the 4th December 1909; it’s the only team which was created before the National Hockey League. So far, the Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup 24 times in their history, more times than any other team. It is no surprise that they have decided to organize many events to mark their centennial as well as releasing many items More >

The Money Driven Hobby

 Guest article by gosens151911

No matter how many of us think that we aren’t affected by the cash that drives this hobby, the truth is the majority of us are. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that keep the hobby from truly reaching its full potential. Case in point, try thinking back to when you were younger and had never heard about Beckett, and probably didn’t even know any of the names of the sets you had. You only cared about the player or the team you pulled. If you traded a ten dollar insert for a penny base card, you More >

My First and Last Time Stealing

 Guest article by Le’Andre

It was the summer of 95 in the beautiful city of Stockholm (Sweden), I was 8 years old at the time and I was collecting hockey cards religiously. My older brother would buy tons of packs every month and I would get all of his leftovers which were mainly consisting of base cards, however I wasn’t disappointed I just loved collecting, looking at and admiring the cards.  Soon enough, it got to the point where I wanted to open a pack all by myself.  I wanted to be the one who pulled a great hit! So being More >

Autograph or Scribble?

Guest article by Spuds1961

I don’t know whether most collectors have noticed, but today’s athletes are getting very lackadaisical with their signatures. As collectors, we spend a lot of money on packs of cards in the hope of obtaining that special autograph of our favorite player. Unfortunately, it is often only to find that our five year old son has better handwriting skills than most of today’s athletes.

Athletes in eras gone by seemed to take pride in their signature like it was a part of who they were and what they represented. Guys like Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Cobb, and a lot More >

Water Lodged Collections

Guest article by Chiefs_Fan

On September 14, 2008, the hard rain continued to fall…It was the third day straight that it rained steady.  We were feeling the aftershocks of the hurricane down south; it brought tons of rain up to us.  I live in central Illinois and we had problems here due to the south’s misfortune.  Rivers were flooding and flooding fast, side roads and small highways that crossed over the Illinois river were closed down for fear that they might not hold the pressures of the pounding water.

I went downstairs to the basement to check and see if there was More >

Set Issues

Guest article by Gladdyontherise

The world of sports has changed drastically in the last 20 years. Back in the mid 1980′s-1990′s, trying to complete a set was fairly easy, but it was still fun for collectors. However, are we getting to a point in time, where people are becoming so greedy or so unwilling to help a collector out, that collecting a set is becoming nothing but stress on top of having to give up too much?

I myself am going after the 2008 Upper Deck Star Quest master set which includes inserts as well as a total of 360 cards. This More >
