Autographed cards are indeed worth more than a regular card. We all know that. but how much more are they worth?

There are several cards I need to make my Edmonton Oilers frame, and I have been diligently scouring eBay and other websites, hoping someone would have the cards I need posted at a reasonable price.

Today I found that someone posted two of the cards I need: Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky Franchise Inks. However, the asking price is absurdly high. The seller is asking $1,000 for the Messier Autograph and $750 AMERICAN for the Gretzky Autograph. That's rediculous! I seriously doubt that ANYONE will pay $1,307 and $980 respectibly for those two cards (plus shipping no less!)

This is the other eBay problem. You want the item, in this case two autographed cards, yet the seller has priced you right out of the game. I want those two cards desperatly, but I can't pay $2,300! thats two mortgage payments!

People seriously over-value what an Item is actually worth. You see it all the time on shows like Antiques Roadshow and Pawn Stars, especailly the latter. People ask to pawn a certain item for a large sum, but the guy behind the counter knows it isn't worth as much as they want to get paid for it. eBay has the same problem. People over-value items too much, like these two hockey cards. People need to start bringing prices down, so items will actually sell.

In the mean time, i guess I will just have to wait until someone posts those two cards at a more reasonable price, or I miraculously pull them from a box.

Ever since eBay went live in 1995, it has, to me, been a blessing and a curse. eBay has afforded me the opportunity to find rare items I might never have otherwise found or been able to purchase any other way.

Rare items, items no longer made or common items not sold in one's area... they are all available on the auction powerhouse.

When I was four years old in 1987, I received a cassette tape that, to this day, I treasure. Smurfin! 10th Anniversary commemorative Album is still one of my favortie albums. However, 15, 20 years after it's release, eBay finally allowed me to obtain another copy, this time on LP. I was also able to find it on CD. Awesome! Other items, like toys from my childhood, porcelain dolls for my mother, certain out of print movies, the EXACT hockey card I need... I can find them all on eBay.

But there are two major problems I face when it comes to eBay: the first problem I encounter is that I find too much of what I want, and I end up spending a lot more money than I should on stuff that I probably don't really need. The second problem I face when it comes to eBay is that when I want something, say, a Ryan Smyth Franchise Ink autographed hockey card or Al Hamilton Retired Number patch card from the 2013 Upper Deck Edmonton Oilers Collection, I have to wait until someone posts for sale that card I'm looking for. Sure, I can buy the box and hope I get the patch card that I need, but that could take a long time buying expensive box after box, and I still may never get the card. It also may never be posted for sale.

So here's to you, eBay, for helping us all out and no doubt frustrating us to no end! A blessing and a curse. Cheers to another 20 years and more!

Sports Memorabilia, insert cards, and Making a really cool Edmonton Oilers custom frame

There are many kinds of sports memorabilia. Memorabilia has been around for decades. Baseball cards, home run balls and bats are some that I think are the oldest items, then hockey sweaters, and possibly magazines and pennants.

Today you can find just about anything slapped with a team's logo. Anything from hats, shirts, sneakers, phone cases, collectable figurines, glasses, you name it, it's probably out there.

Sports cards, though, have been around since before Honus Wagner, and some, like Honus Wagner's tobacco card, can be worth a great deal of money - should one find the right collector. Sports cards in general have gone up and down in value, peaking in the 1990's when they were massively over-produced.

Back in the day when you bought a package of trading cards for, oh, say, 10¢, the only insert you got was a stick of bubble gum that was so hard it might have even cut you cheek. Nowadays you get limited print cards, cards with shiny foil, pieces of game worn jerseys or slivers of a hockey stick or baseball bat, or perhaps even multiple game worn jerseys. Upper Deck has even manufactured patches that mimic championship banners and retirement banners. Highly sought after, though, are the autographed cards that come randomly inserted into packs of cards.

15 to 20 years ago, when autographed cards first were introduced, the athlete was given a number of cards to personaly hold and sign. Today they are given a set of stickers to sign, and the company simply places the stickers on whatever card they wish. In the 2013 Edmonton Oilers Collection from Upper Deck, there are single autograph cards from 81 different Edmonton Oilers players. there are also cards featuring multiple autographs - duos, triples and quads. A quad of Gretzky, Kurri, Messier and Coffey would a great find. Upper Deck puts the autographed stickers in many combonations; Doug Weight and Jason Arnott; Doug Weight, Ryan Smyth and Mike Grier; Doug Weight and Bill Guerin, Etc.

Some purists hate the stickers, as the card has not been held and autographed by said athlete; me, I don't care one way or the other, as long as the autograph is authentic, and Upper Deck prides itself on the fact that the autographs they deliver are, in fact, authentic. I appreciate that very much.

When I went to Disneyland in 2005, I bought a "character sketch" of Stitch and Chip 'n' Dale. I got them professionally framed, but I didn't just want the picture framed; I wanted it to look way past cool. I had them include an "autograph" of Stitch (the character at the Disney Park "autographed" a piece of paper) and some pins. Click the Links to see both frames.

When I'm making a sports frame, I want to include much more than just an autographed picture. MUCH MORE.

I put together a frame for a Glenn Anderson autograph I purchased the night his #9 jersey was retired by the Oilers.

You can see it at the link below:

https://www.facebook.com/hologramcus...type=3&theater

It has not only the autographed photo, but two hockey cards, a special "retired number" insert card from Panini, a plaque that gives his career teams and stats, two pins and, my favourite part, six more extremely rare pins in the shape of the stanley cup denoting his six cup wins.

My inspiration for making an Edmonton Oilers custom frame is an Edmonton Eskimos frame I had done.

https://www.facebook.com/hologramcus...type=3&theater

This frame has 19 player cards and one card of Commonwealth Stadium where the Eskies play. Also included are 11 extremely rare pins in the shape of the Greyy cup, with the Eskimos logo and the year of the cup victory. (Two other pins, the bottom right two) are in the shape of the Grey Cup, but I added the logo.)

There are two logo pins, a bigger text logo and a plaque with some team information.

I am collecting the sports memorabilia to make an Edmonton Oilers frame. I have the logo, the pins, and many of the autographed cards. This time, the frame is going to have over 30 cards, and all autographed. With my Eskimos frame, I left out many, many notable players due to lack of space. 55 years of players pared down to only 19. I should have had more, but I didn't. However, I tried my best to represent all eras as best I could, but ultimatly I feel I left out too many great Eskimos players.

My Edmonton Oilers frame will include almost all of the great, memorable Oilers of the past 35 years.

I still need to obtain some of the signature cards, so if anyone could help me out by trading for the autograph cards from the Upper Deck Edmonton Oilers collection, I would be most grateful.

I have autographs of some players I am willing to trade for autographs from the Upper Deck Oilers Collection.

Here are some of the Autographs I need:

Wayne Gretzky
Paul Coffey
Mark Messier
Glenn Anderson
Jari Kurri
Grant Fuhr
Ethan Moreau
Curtis Joseph
Bill Ranford
Ryan Smyth

Anyway, my frame is going to look super cool. I don't know what the actual dimensions will be, but my Edmonton Eskimos frame was 27½" x 24½", so, with a lot more cards in the frame, I can well imagine it's going to be much bigger.

It is going to include up to 40 cards, 2 pins representing the 1982-83 Campbell Conference championship and 2005-06 Western Conference championship, as well as five pins in the shape of the Stanley Cup (one for each year). It will also contain an informational plaque, and the teams' logo. It will be more or less the same as the Edmonton Eskimos frame, only with Oilers colors and players. The only thing is is that I can't yet find a suitable image of the Oielrs former home, Northlands Coliseum/Rexall Place. There is a Panini sticker, but it's going for .99¢ on eBay with 10.00 AMERICAN shipping! I can't justify spending nearly $20 on a sticker!

hopefully I will be able to complete my collection of autographs soon, if, maybe, some of the good people on this forum would trade with me. I know I don't have any trades yet, but I have over 400 positives on eBay, if that means anything. There is a card show tomorrow here in Edmonton, so I may be able to trade for or purchase some of the cards I need.

Thats it for now; I will blog again when I have more news on my frame.
