Last week I received two autographs in the mail from former Canuck players.

One player was Paul Lawless, who played seven seasons in the NHL, his best with the Hartford Whalers where he scored 54 points in 60 games. He played briefly with the Canucks, donning the jersey for 13 games with the team. A quick signer, my TTM was returned after 23 days.

The other player was Gene Sobchuk, who had the unfortanute mistake of being deemed "deceased" in the autograph world. A little strange how one person can claim them as deceased and everyone else follows. Fortanutely, a great TTM member realized he was in fact alive and well on his farm in Saskatchewan and promptly sent out his request to be received in quick fashion. I, myself, sent out my request and received it back in 19 days. I hope he'll get more recognition for being alive and well!!

That makes 2 more Canucks to my all time Canuck autographs, making me about 84% complete for the team. Very happy about this and I hope to be at 85% by the end of the year.

Today I received the dreaded letter today from the family of Ernie Laforce. I sent my TTM request to him in mid-September and unfortanutely he passed away on October 18th. While I never like receiving news from a family member that their loved one has passed away, I do appreciate them sending me a note back. I can pass on to other people the unfortanute news and spare the family from further receiving TTM requests.

For those of you unfamiliar with Ernie Laforce - I don't blame you. He played one NHL game for the Montreal Canadiens during the Original Six era. While his NHL career wasn't long, he had a long career with the Montreal Royals as a steady defenceman.

I received an autograph request back from a player who played during the 1948-1949 NHL season. His name is Val Delory, and not only did he sign a few of the custom (homemade) hockey cards I created, but he also wrote a full page letter back to me. It's players such as Mr. Delory that motivates me into collecting some of the older hockey players. Not only do they sign quickly, and love to receive mail, but they appreciate a collector and take the time out of their day to respond to some of the questions.

Mr. Delory said that one of his memorable moments during his hockey career was on his 21st birthday when he skated in front of 15,000 hockey fans in Madison Square Gardens (home of the New York Rangers) while the "Happy Birthday" song played. Pretty cool stuff. This was probably his only NHL game!!

His grandson was a San Jose draft pick, just finishing up an OHL career (junior hockey for the Oshawa Generals) and will now be moving into the Florida Panthers organization. I definitely know who this player is, and I believe I have made a custom card for him as well. I have yet to receive his autograph, but if he is like his grandfather and plays in the NHL, it won't be too long after until I add his autograph to my collection.
