Well, this is it...the last weekend of the season. Who comes to the big dance and who has a date with the golf clubs will be decided shortly. Mind you, most of the attendees to the dance are already known but there is still the small matter of the last 3 spots in the East. Philadelphia, Boston, the Rangers and the Habs are stuck in a fight to the death. Tonight, the Habs are playing the Leafs. A win in and they will be given their ticket in to the playoffs fun fair, a loss and they will have to anxiously await the result of tomorrow's clash between the Flyers and the Rangers. Should the Rangers win in overtime, both the Rangers and Flyers would qualify for the playoffs. As for Boston, they still have two games to play and a win tonight would guarantee springtime hockey in Beantown.

What an exciting day this promises to be. As an Habs fan, having seen them fail to book their place two games in a row, I will admit that I am a little bit nervous but I keep the fait nonetheless! I am definitely going to stay up to watch the game tonight and I am confident that Halak will goal heck of a game and get the Habs right where they belong, in the playoffs!

Why am I so confident you ask? Well how could a day where I pulled the card below not be a lucky day?

Yesterday I made a decision...While I still love the hobby, I realized that I was spending a bit too much time on the site and site duties and neglecting some of life's issues...I can't stop collecting because, well that would just be too hard but what I could do though, was take a step back from the site duties. As a result, I decided to step down from my staff position. For the eagle eyed members who notice badges, that's why my 2 staff badges have been replaced by a retired staff one...

I had a blast on the SCF staff team and I will solely miss my "colleagues" but I did want to take the time to say that being on staff gave me the chance to know a lot of members much better than if I had never been in the position. I'm happy to see how much the hockey forum has grown in the last couple of years and I'm glad I've met so many people.

While I am no longer on staff, I will still carry on using the site and get more active once again on the trading front so I am really looking forward to that :)

See you on the boards everyone!
Thanks

2009 is now in the books and I am happy to say that it has truly been an amazing hobby year for me! Thinking back on the last 12 months, here are the top 10 additions to my PC.
10. Patrick Roy / Carey Price Heroes and Prospects He Shoots He scores /20

9. Martin Brodeur/Vincent Lecavalier UD Black Game Night Ticket 5/5
My second favorite pull of the year, it was a redemption which took its time to get to me but was it sweet when I opened the bubble wrapper:

8. Roy The Cup Signature Patches 8/25 (4 colors) Yet another card coming from Joel, one of my sweetest patches no doubt! Love the color mix and the breaks.

7. Martin Brodeur - Henrik Lundqvist UD Black Game Night Ticket 6/10
This one I got in a in-person trade with Jeremy (Gomaz) in Cleveland during the National Sports Collectors Convention. I traded him my pull of the show for it (Crosby painting autoed card) but it was definitely worth it. Happy to see you on our boards more and more Jeremy and I do hope to see you again in Baltimore!

Amazingly enough, I got that one for free. It was a rather generous gift from Tony at the Nationals in July and to this day it is still one of my favorite dual autographs.

6. Past Present and Future Gold Version 1/1 Roy, Brodeur, Price 552 1/1
Another card acquirred from Chris and what a card it is, more or less a double unique cards featuring my two personal collection players and the current Habs goaltender. I absolutely love the card so again Chris, thanks so much!

5. Roy Honorable Number The Cup 23/33
I had always wanted an honorable number card for my favorite player and that wish finally came through this year. I bought the card from Joel (who has posted more and more on SCF this year JoelCarry make sure to check out his break he has some nice cards!) one of our many transaction thanks a bunch Joel!

4. SPX Legends Roy autograph 4/5
This is my shortest print Roy autographed card and I got it from a trade with one of our new traders this year Chris (bossy'scards - check him out he has an amazing bucket and is amazing to deal with!)

3. Made To Order - BTP 08-09 Patrick Roy Complete jersey. When I pulled the redemption card in September, I didn't hesitate very long before deciding that I needed to get my own unique Roy card made! I sent it in at the end of the month and I got it back at the start of December but boy was it worth waiting.

2. Avalanche "33" Roy jersey - I have had the jersey for a few years but on the 18th December 2009, I finally managed to get it autographed by Saint-Patrick himself! It took a lot of patience after the game but it was definitely worth the wait!

1. Habs "33" Roy jersey - For my 30th Birthday my parents got me a Canadiens Habs jersey featuring the patch just like on the jersey when the Habs last won the Cup. They gave me the present early as they knew I was planning to go to a Remparts game to get my other jersey signed and they wanted me to be able to get this one done as well. Did I manage it? Well, the picture speaks for itself...

And there you have it, my collecting year in review! I'm curious now, what are your top ten additions in the last year?

Comments welcome as always!

I came back to the hobby in early 2007 and boy had it changed since I left it. Back in the days when I was still collecting the game-used phenomenon had yet to hit the masses and the emphasis was still on completing sets. That was back in 1995 or something like that... Fast forward to 2007 and being stuck at home after yet another knee operation, I decided I needed to find a hobby if I didn't want to go completely bonkers. Having moved to England in 2002, I was missing hockey dearly and taking up collecting again seemed like the best option as it would keep me busy and take me closer to the game I loved so much.

Needless to say, I immediately starting buying wax and busting it at a vertiginous speed. Not knowing exactly what to expect I was stoked to pull my first ever game-used card! Little did I know these were now common occurrences; I soon found out though by looking online and reading up on the hobby right here on sportscardforum. After observing for a few months, I decided to take the plunge and sign-up. This was the best decision ever, the rest of my rehabilitation off work just flew by! From then on, collecting became the number one mean to cheer myself up when needed.

We're now in 2009 and unfortunately, the problematic knee is still messing up...As a result, I am once more stuck at home with a tens machine and a ice pack. Some might think being off work is a good thing but I can promise you that sitting there for days doing very little gets old quite quickly. So, there I was last weekend, up at 2.30 AM and unable to sleep because of my painful knee in a rather deflated mood I must admit. I came to the conclusion that I had to do something to cheer myself up and even though my financial situation is far from being ideal, an hobby shopping spree seemed like the best course of action.

Where to buy though? Thinking back to my experience at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland this summer and what I pulled when I got a box from Dave and Adam's over there (see picture below), I decided to get a few boxes from them.

What to get though? The 2009-2010 big releases have yet to hit us so it looked like 2008-2009 was the best option for now. That still left me with quite a few choices. Remembering what I traded the above Crosby for in Cleveland (see picture below) I decided to gamble on one box of UD Black. Two packs at two cards per packs for $177, it's a bit pricey but hey, I could maybe pull something like my current favorite Brodeur card.

This wouldn't be enough to keep me entertained for a whole day though...So hoping to pull some excellent ITG Memorabilia cards, I opted for a box of Between the Pipes. Can you blame me? I still need a Brodeur and a Roy Supersized glove.

While I was at it, why not pick up a couple of boxes of my favorite 08-09 product, Legends Masterpieces? I did just that and with 4 boxes in my basket, I decided it was time to check out. Four days later, the bell rang at 10.00 AM, it was DHL delivering my boxes! How quick was that? As I got the parcel from the courier, I was full of hope s and wishing for massive mojo. I tried to wait and do live breaks on the site once more people were online but I just couldn't do it! I told myself "How about just one box and then I'll wait for the others and share the break".

I decided to bust the box of black as it was the smallest one pack number wise and I wasn't really ready for what was going to happen. Sure, I was hoping for a big pull but I didn't imagine that something like this would come out of it:

I immediately logged on to UD's website and redeemed this beauty! Could I stop busting after that though? No I couldn't! I just had to open more. Already completely satisfied with what I had pulled I attacked the Masterpieces boxes. They didn't yield any major hits and a few of the borders were damaged, like Masterpieces are so often unfortunately. As that break wasn't as much fun, well I couldn't stop so I moved on to the last box, Between the Pipes.

It started with low level pulls and nothing for my personal collection, as I progressed through the packs, I started to fear a below par break. With only one pack left, I had almost lost all hope of a great pull. But then! Look what the last pack revealed:

Only the best possible pull in the whole product! So there you have it, yesterday truly was my best day ever in the hobby. Once again it came through with flashing colors to cheer me up when needed! Now, I can look forward to receiving my redemption and getting the sweet made to order card.

If only I could have more days like that...

Thanks for reading,

Having finally sorted out all of my Roy cards earlier this week, I decided to do the same for my second main guy; Martin Brodeur. It took some time, but I did it. I started by importing the checklist to the application Luc made before entering each of the cards I have in my inventory.

Overall, the new winningest goalie in history has got over 4,700 cards, again quite an impressive total! Of those, 534 are autographs and 1,726 have a piece of memorabilia. Impressive number...Ever since I got back into collecting, Roy has been my main focus while Brodeur has been well, almost an afterthought i'm ashamed to say and the numbers do show it...I only have a mere 324 Brodeur cards. Of course there are some nice pieces there but I would love to be able to catch up to my Roy collection...

Here is a link to my inventory: http://www.careypricecards.com/playe...ivcol.php?id=2

Player Collecting...Not all that Easy

As most of you no doubt know by now, I collect Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. Although, to be honest, Martin is the number two guy and my first priority has always been Patrick...Why? Probably because he is the one I grew up idolizing and mimicking (from the butterfly style to the bad temper and even to that wink, I did it all).

I started collecting again two and a half years ago and try as I may, it is far from easy to be a completist when you collect a player who has that many cards. I mean the truth of the matter is, Roy currently has 5,322 cards which include over 500 autographs and over 2000 game used cards. Do I even need to mention how much each of those cards can set you back by?

The other tricky aspect of player collecting for me is that living in England, I do not have access to a hobby shop, a card show or the local card store. All the cards I find and have found in the last 2.5 years have mainly been acquired online. Either here on SCF or on eBay. So after 2.5 years of effort, how many cards do you think I have of Roy?

I could let you guess but I doubt you will, I updated my site with my recent acquisitions lately and I was shocked to find that I only have 700 of his cards. This includes 22 autographs (with 4 more incomining), 3 1/1s, the obligatory OPC rookie and an impressive amount of GU but try as I may, I fear I will never get a shinny little super collector badge below my name...oh well, such is the life of an exiled player collector.

However, I must say that I am getting increasingly pleased with the look of my collection. I am loving the autographs, even though I only have a mere 4.5% of all of the ones he has signed. And the worst thing is, I am happy that he still has cards in pretty much every releases as it means more to chase...but it also make the numbers even more out of reach everytime.

Today was the last day of the Nationals and it was quite a good day for all of us. It was less busy than the last two days but our giveaway still managed to draw a bit of a crowd. Debbie Herrmann was the lucky winner of a triple autograph card numbered to only five and ?I must say that her son looked absolutely chuffed.

Today, I had planned to stay at the booth for most of the day however, things did not go as planned...My husband and sister in law who came to Cleveland with me attended the show for the first day and I figured I could use them to get my wrapper redemption pack from Upper Deck. I had bought a box of Upper Deck Series 1 yesterday and saved 5 packs from it to open for the redemption program so I asked them to go over and bust the 5 packs for me. They did and came back with a rather excited look on their faces, they had got a Sidney Crosby Hockey Heroes art card autographed 51/87. Needless to say I was completely over the moon with that and as I am not a Crosby fan or collector, I proceeded to try and flip the card for a PC item.

While there isn't a lot of Hockey in Cleveland, there was still a few tempting cards out there so I had a thorough look at what was on offer and within minutes, my heart was set on a UD Black Dual autograph Game Night Ticket of Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist numbered 6/10. The owner of the said card was none other than Gomaz and after some time negotiating, we managed to work out a deal. I was absolutely chuffed as my one regret was the fact that I had hardly picked up any Marty during the event. Thanks a million to Jeremy for the trade, it truly made my day!

As I am typing these lines, many dealers have already packed up or are in the process of packing up even though there still is an hour 20 minutes to go to the show. You can tell that everyone is tired and glad that things are wrapping up.

This has been an intense experience to say the least and I have had an absolute blast! I cannot wait to be back and show off my pickups. I fly back to England tomorrow overnight and land on Tuesday morning, you can expect a massive show and tell thread sometime Tuesday :)

Oooops I have been told that I can do a video break of UD Black now so duty calls...Over and Out!

Today's pickup: Brodeur/Lundquvist dual game night ticket auto 6/10

Today was yet another great day for SCF at the Nationals! There were numerous highlights to my day starting with the interview I did with Chris Carlin from Upper Deck, a really nice guy who answers every question openly and doesn't shy away from giving you information! Thanks for your time Chris I really appreciated it. You will all be able to read the full interview in the next edition of Collector's Corner which should be out on the 10th August (delayed a bit because of the Nationals).

The SCF table was also pretty busy today, we had a record number of sign ups for our raffle of the day and we gave team bags of cards away to many people, I trully hope that some of them check us out and that we get some new members out of this!

Of course, I spent some time (and money) looking around and made a few important purchases, most notably a Roy The Cup Scripted Swatches for $180, a Roy The Cup Signature Patches $125 and I also traded with Don for a Roy/Brodeur UD black quad jersey.

At the end of the day, I also got a very nice surprise, Tony gave me his Roy/Price dual jersey with Roy autoHe shoots he scores card as a thank you for helping out at his table :cheer2: Or maybe it was because he felt bad for me that there was no ITG Between the Pipes redemptions lol...In any event, thanks so much for the card Tony I LOVE it! Jeff also gave me a Roy Original Six GU which is not too shabby either! Thanks backboy!

We had a nice dinner tonight at Buffalo wild wings and I must say the hot wings truly were hot!

That's it for today all! Now on to the last day already...

Friday was a fairly busy day at the SCF tables, we got plenty of entrants for the SCF give away of the day (Tom Brady rookie) and gave out several packs of cards which all included a business card. Hopefully some of the people we gave them to will come and check us out!

I didn't have much time to browse, having spent time at the tables and then on the phone with my stupid bank which decided to block my account for unusual activity (purchases in the USA) even though I had told them in advance that I was going to the US and not to block it for security measures... I was NOT impressed.

I did get a chance to walk around from 15.30 onwards and spotted some LOVELY Roy Cup cards, which in turn prompted another night or mulling over this serious dilemma...What to do, what to do...The Cup Signatures...The Cup Scripted Swatches? Or even OPC Premier Rare Remnants Gretzky/Roy/Lemieux 33/55? I have yet to make a decision and the show opens in 3 hours...oh dear... I also got to meet quite a few members, including Gomaz and he talked about his Upper Deck experience, I cannot wait to see all of his Cup pictures! Plenty of members dropped by the SCF tables as well and it was very nice to meet them too!

In the evening, we attended the Indians-Tigers game but we had to leave before the end...It got to midnight and we were all very aware of the long day ahead today...I got myself a big foam finger and an incredibly comfortable Indians sweatshirt (perfect lounging around gear!).

Well, that's it for Day 3! Sorry for the delay but the game finished too late to post last night...Today I have an interview scheduled with Chris Carlin from UD, read all about it in the SCF magazine next week!

Over and out!

Today's pickups: 4 Roy inserts (see? I can control myself!!!)

P.S: Richard, Sean and Houng, I have been keeping an eye out for you but so far, no luck really...This really isnt a hockey town unfortunately and while you can find the big names of hockey the ones with a lower hobby interest are hard to come by :(

We have now all survived our second day of activity at the Nationals and I must say today was much busier than yesterday, normal I suppose as it was the first full day!

I spent most of the morning working on an article for the next edition of collector's corner based on the prices offered by the major dealers there and also comparing the prices to their online prices. Here are my results by sports:

Baseball

UD series 1: Blowout $52, Atlanta Sports cards $55, Dave and Adam $57
Goudey:Blowout: $74, Atlanta $72, DandA $80
Allen and Ginter: : Blowout $65, Atlanta $79, DandA $82
Legendary Cuts: : Blowout $88, Atlanta $90, DandA $89

Football

Press Pass Legends: Blowout $124, Atlanta $118, DandA $135
Donruss Classics: Blowout $77, Atlanta $77, D and A $79
UD Icons: Blowout $73, Atlanta $73, DandA $75
Topps Magic: Blowout $67, Atlanta $70, D and A $69

Hockey
Ultimate collection: Blowout $93, Atlanta N/A, Dand A $100
Ice: Blowout $70, Atlanta $80, Dand A N/A
SPGU: blowout $125m Atlanta $119, DandA N/A
OPC Premier: Blowout N/A, Atlanta N/A, DandA $160

Basketball
Draft Edition:: Blowout sold out, Atlanta TBC, DandA $75
SPA: Blowout $130, Atlanta Retail only, Dand A N/A
Topps Treasury:: Blowout $77, Atlanta N/A, Dand A N/A

So there you go, an easy guide to who sells for what, check out collectors corner in the second week of August to see a full breakdown of their online prices and a verdict on whether the cards are cheaper online or at the show.

Today was a very good day and I must give two thumbs up to our friends at Blowout cards they were more than forthcoming with their pricing info and gave me details about the upcoming few days for them and what will be on offer to the customers, I think it's safe to say that Blowout is going all out! Some nice surprises attend their customers! Their owner was also kind enough to share the special National discount code with SCF's members which gives everyone $10 off their order.

On a personal level, I did my best to resist but I just couldnt...I had to get a monster of a card; Roy Complete package with 4 awesome swatches, i cannot wait to show that one off! I also got myself a graded auto and several inserts as well as spotting a Marty autoed puck and autoed mini mask (which would go great with my Patty autoed mini mask now wouldnt it?). I took part in UD's wrapper redemption and got a Bowman masterpiece brown border brushstroke auto, a green border Esposito and of course the pack of 6 UD special National edition.

At the SCF booth, Mike organized a giveaway and the lucky winner bagged himself a great Crabtree card, over 170 people signed up for the draw and the lucky winner was more than pleased!

Finally, tonight we held a pack wars in Tony's room and I m happy to report that I pulled my second Bowman Masterpiece brushstroke auto, although this time it was Green border and numbered to 15. Pack wars being what they are however, the precious card ended up in Back boy's hands (Jeff)...Oh well you win some, you lose some.

I look forward to another great day tomorrow and my first baseball game in years!

Karine

Today's purchases:

Roy Complete Package 6/9
Roy H and P GU
Roy SOTT auto graded 8
quite a few Roy inserts.

(apparently, I am grounded tomorrow and must stay at the SCF table for my finance's health LOL

Well today was the day, finally time for me to attend my first card show and not just any show, the Nationals! I must say that the size of the actual exhibition centre was impressive right from the start, quite early on, as dealers were setting up, it was easy to see that there would be an impressive amount of goods on offer.

We got there at 10.00 am and started setting up Tony's table and the SCF tables, by 2.00 pm we were pretty much ready with plenty of time to spare before the VIP attendees were allowed in at 4.30 pm.

Once it officially kicked off people started coming in and while it wasnt insanely busy, there was still a fair crowd. I had time to walk around quite a bit tonight and I already started to gather some items for the PC. I cannot say that there is a lot of hockey around but if you look carefully enough, you can find what you need. I have now started noting on my map of the show the tables of the dealer who have interesting stuff for me. The one massive let down however is the fact that ITG are not doing any BTP redemption program, it's fair to say that I am absolutely gutted about that but oh well...hopefully someone can come up with a special redemption program for me (hint hint yes you over there!)

The show is quite heavily dominated by baseball and football items which comes as no surprize considering the popularity of the Indians (who apparently committed popularity suicide by trading Cliff Lee today who I understand was their best pitcher) and the Browns.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day as we have a whole day of attendees ahead of us and of course, the pack war in Tony's room at the Red Roof Inn in the evening, if you want to take part, please drop by Tony's table (2152) and let us know. I do hope to see many of you there and for those who cannot make it, I shall write another update tomorrow.

Now I need to decide if I can afford an awesome card I saw today...decisions decisions...I definitely need to learn to haggle as well...

My pick ups so far:
12 Roy inserts
3 Photos limited to 5000 copies depicting Roy's career
1 dual GU Bourque/Roy (3 color) - trade with Don, thanks for that!

For the last month or so I have been so busy that I havent really made any trades, well none that involved going to the post office anyways as I honestly dont have the time...Why you ask? Well, I work full time and study part-time converting my law degree into one that will be valid in good old England. It's not too hard to cope during most of the year but when the finals are approaching, it gets absolutely crazy...This weekend alone, I killed (or emptied whatever you want to call it) 3 brand new pens. My total of revision cards now stands at 103 for Land Law, 98 for Criminal and 25 for Trust and Equity (that exam is last so no rush)...I'm pretty sure I am now pretty sure that I'm actually studying in my sleep, I woke up thinking about the principles of severance of a Joint Tenancy today how very sad...

But the worst thing is: I MISS TRADING!!!! I want some new Patty and Marty!!! I've also been saving for the Nationals, which means that I've hardly busted anything lately (do you have any idea how hard it is not to buy any packs of Ultimate collection when you are completely addicted to busting boxes?!?)

The end is near though...My exams are the 8th, 10th, 15th and 16th of June, after that, I will be back in the trading business! I just cant wait and I strongly believe that I will have deserved to buy myself at least one box to bust by then!

In the meantime, all I can do is study hard and wait for the recent redemptions/purchases to come in...

oh and when it's done...I will have the Nationals to look forward to! :cheer2:

Well, the hubby and I just couldn't resist any longer, we decided to watch the double lenght season finale of Lost with dinner tonight and wowser what a show!

So many things happened it was unreal, I think I need to watch it once more to wrap my head around it all. My top 10 moments in a particular order number one being the best:

10. Rose and Bernard reappearing. It was great to see them alive and well and to see that the writers had not forgotten about them

9. The flashback with Jack in the OR. It was nice to finally see a moment which has been mentioned quite a few times in the show so far.

8. The talk and following fight between Jack and Sawyer. That was a long time in the making! My one problem with the scene being Jack admitting he wants to reset time because he lost his girl...bit of an overeaction really isnt it?

7. Juliet taking matters in her own hands in the sub to return to the Island. Way to knock that guy out! This year, she has no doubt been my favorite character.

6. Jack and Sayid walking amongst the Darma crew and having to fight WW III. I have to ask though, when did Jack become Rambo?

5. Hurley's own brand of Darma van rescue. At the barracks first and then at the Swan...Always right in the nick of time just like when he rescued Jin, Sayid and Bernard on the beach in the season 4 series finale

4. Kate saving Sawyer's life by shooting the Darma guy who was about to shoot him in the Swan firefight. In fact, I liked this whole fight sequel, pretty impressive.

3. Locke is not Locke!!!! Easy to say now but I did think he was different this year...that woule be why lol

2. The scene where Bernard says: "So what if we die? We'll be together and thats all that matters". Juliet looking at Sawyer and her heart breaking when she sees him looking at Kate...Top notch work from Elizabeth Mitchell there, I actually paused it and told my husband this would be a significant look...

1. The final sequence between Juliet and Sawyer, I will admit it, I actually cried. Such a good couple! And so sad to see her get dragged down...awful yet brilliant TV moment....

So, what did you think? What were your favorite moments? Do you think the bomb worked? Or was it just one of those time flashes at the end? Is Juliet dead or alive? What's the deal with Jacob?

So many questions...and so long to wait...
