  1. The law of diminishing returns

In the space of 48 hours, the Yankees are finding themselves filling up their off-season shopping list.

First, Mark Teixiera announces on Friday that he'll call it a career when the season ends. The other shoe dropped this morning with news that Alex Rodriguez is going to play his last game on Friday, 8/12, vs. Tampa Bay, then move into a special advisor/roving instructor gig until the end of 2017.

In Rodriguez's case, maybe this should've been considered before the ...

  2. In New York, stupidity works both ways

    I just don't get it.

With a week to go before the trade deadline, the Yankees traded away fireballing closer Aroldis Chapman to the NL Central leading Chicago Cubs, getting back reliever Adam Warren and three minor leaguers in return. Warren, based on what I'd read, didn't quite find a comfort zone in Chicago, perhaps unhappy about being forced to leave the Bronx after last season. Now, he comes home, and the Yanks have wasted money spent on a marketing campaign.

    What ...

  3. Murphy's Law: How the Mets may have given away the NL East

I don't know who gave Mets GM Sandy Alderson the idea that Daniel Murphy was expendable after his October home run barrage. Yes, the fact remains he ran out of gas in the World Series, and New York lost in 5 to Kansas City. For some reason, the Wilpons decided they didn't need Murphy anymore, and, oh, how he has made them pay in the first 3 1/2 months of the season.

Consider: With Murphy gone, the Mets traded for Neil Walker, and looked like geniuses doing so, since Jon Niese hasn't ...

  4. The Sports Fraud says he'll retire. Why not do it now, and get it over with?

It has been the longest running con job in broadcasting history. Yes, it'll come to an end soon, but not soon enough.

I'm referring to WFAN afternoon host Mike Francesa, whom the tabloid press refers to as "The Sports Pope", because he projects the image of knowing about the subjects he covers on his show, when he is routinely roasted by sports media critics for being, well, a fraud.

It's about the only thing I'd actually agree with New York Post media gadfly ...

  5. Upstate New York gets dissed again!

Twice in the last three weeks, in the WNBA & NFL drafts, there were chances of players with ties to my home turf getting drafted. Unfortunately, the pro leagues have once again treated upstate New York like the late Rodney Dangerfield. No respect!

Start with the WNBA. Jamaican-born Shereesha Richards, who makes her off-season home in New Jersey, was assumed to be a lock to be taken in the draft after dominating the America East in 4 seasons at the University at Albany. Didn't ...
