Voice of the 'Fan

In the end, it's business as usual

It's funny how one night changes everything.

The New York Yankees had been swept in 4 games by the moribound Mets, who aren't languishing in last place because Miami is just more putrid than they are. Overall, the Mets had won 5 in a row, ending Atlanta's winning streak on Sunday prior to Subway Series '13, and the Yanks, after losing to Tampa Bay, also on Sunday, now were on a 5 game skid.

On Friday, the Yanks got infielders Kevin Youkilis & Mark Teixiera back from the disabled list, just in time for the hated Red Sox to come to town. The Mets went to Miami. If anyone thought the Mets would keep the beat going, well.......

Miami pitcher Jacob Turner, who came over from Detroit last summer, made his season debut, and got the benefit of a 4 run, ice-breaking rally in the 7th, as the Marlins beat the Mets, 5-1. The Yankees, psychologically spurred by the return of their stars, beat the Sox, 4-1.

So what happened with the Mets? As it often happens, when you're sky high after an emotional win, a team can let its collective guard down against a lesser opponent. That's normal for the Mets. The momentum from three late-inning comebacks, followed by 2 dominating wins, had been flushed. Of course, it didn't help that Atlanta lost again, this time to Washington.

The tabloid press will dredge up the same tired old refrains. Yeah, whatever. It's business as usual in New York.
