Collecting Yastrzemski - August, 2013

Rate this Entry
This was a very big month for not only my collection but for being a Yastrzemski fan as well! Michael was named Minor League Offensive Player of the Month for the Orioles organization & was selected for the 2013 New York-Penn All-Star Game! At the time of this writing his Aberdeen Ironbirds sit a half game up of Brooklyn for the lead in their division. I so wish that I lived closer to be able to attend some games. On September 3rd, the first 873 fans to Ripken Field will receive a Mike Yastrzemski Ironbirds T-shirt! If anyone reading this happens to attend, I would gladly pay for one of these!

As far as adding to my collection, August started off with a bang thanks to the National. My one day at the show yeilded 95 total Yastrzemski pieces! Including this large lot of 60 pieces that was sold as a Yastrzemski grab bag!

Most of the "regular" cards I already had, but I was thrilled by the old postcards that I have to track down now since there was no year or anything on the back of them! Up next is a nice 3 piece lot that I picked up from another dealer at the show which includes the '69 Topps Stamps Red Sox Team Booklet, a 1966 Topps LL card & a 1970 Topps Poster of Don Mincher! That's right, I said Don Mincher! Now the large color head shot is of Don, but the small black & white action shot is of Carl. Carl's #8 can be seen on the back of the jersey & not Don's #5 that he wore for his one season in Seattle. This is actually an unrecognized, uncorrected error that was pointed out to me a while back.

This next shot is of everything else I picked up from various dealers at the show, with the exception of the 2006 Allen & Ginter that BSEBALLCOMMISH75 picked up for me!

Lord knows I spent more than I probably should have at the National, but this next shot is what made it all worth while!

That's me, LoQtus, doniceage & BSEBALLCOMMISH75! Couldn't ask for a better company at the show than these guys! Of course it wouldn't have been a worthwhile trip to Chicago without going to Wrigley! Of course the Cubs lost, but LoQtus, Commish & my wife all got to cross this off their "bucket" lists.

Here's a shot of the Commish with his first Official Wrigley beer!

LoQtus at the statue of Harry!

And one final pic from Wrigley, the Mrs. & I! Nobody freak out or anything with me in a Cubs hat, I wear one every time I go there out of respect for my grandmother who was a die-hard Cubs fan!

My wife was such a trooper throughout the entire weekend, but by the end of the game she was hurting something awful. After all was said & done when we were on our way home, she asked if we were going to Cleveland next year though! I love my wife!

Now ordinarily that would be a great month in itself, but it didn't end there. Even though I didn't make a single trade on SCF I was able to find some great deals on eBay which included a 4x6 autographed picture of Michael at the plate for the Ironbirds.

I also picked up one of the programs from the 2013 New York-Penn All-Star Game, which incidentally Michael & the American League won! Other eBay wins included a 5 card lot of Carl (all of which I needed), the 1975 Kellogg's (which completed my needs for that brand), a 2007 Topps Sterling white suede #/50 & a 2009 Topps Legendary Letters Comemorative Patch card (only 9 more of those to finish his name!)

To top off all of that, since I was so close to getting the number of Carl's cards needed to reach the 15% required to apply for SuperCollector status here on SCF, my wife went & ordered me a 20 card lot from COMC to allow me to submit my application. She also found one of the minor league cards that I still needed of Mike from there as well! Have I mentioned how much I love my wife?

So with a little bit of luck, next month I'll be able to report that I am an Official SuperCollector! That will definitely make for a nice 42nd birthday gift! Keep your fingers crossed!

Special Thanks go out to the following for helping me add to my PC this month:

BSEBALLCOMMISH75 - 2006 Allen & Ginter #277
My wife - for either buying or allowing me to buy everything else!

SuperCollector status: Carl - 15.1%, Mike - 77.8%, Michael - 100%

Well, that's it for this month!

Take care,
Kelly

I would've loved to have grown up around Boston, it would've made finding stuff of his a lot easier than being in the Midwest my entire life! Thank you so much for your comment! I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to post anything at all after it hit 800+ views!

It must be difficult to find his stuff in the midwest. I have lived in the UK for six years now and have to find stuff online mostly from Hunt Auctions and mainly I collect Ted Williams and some vintage Red Sox/Fenway stuff. Have you been to Fenway Park?

It's gotten easier since the internet, that's for sure! I couldn't imagine the difficulty trying to get things being in the UK. Especially now that postage has gone through the roof. And sadly, no, I have never been to Fenway.

Hope you make it to Fenway one day. I lived in Boston for two years and walked to Fenway. I was fortunate to be able to buy a game 1 04 World Series ticket and sat in the left field grandstand. And after Steve Tyler sang the national anthem, guess who walked out of the left field wall - Yaz. It was a magical moment one never forgets!!!

    Wow! Cool beans!

Anyway, Mike and the Ironbirds were in my neck of the woods for the NY-P playoffs last night vs. Tri-City. Aberdeen's season is over as Tri-City completed a 2-game sweep, advancing to the championship round again. MikeYaz went 0-4 and was hit by a pitch. Oh, well. I'd say the odds are pretty good that if the Orioles hang onto him, he'll be up in Baltimore in a year or two, unless ownership gets stupid (Hey, it's Baltimore!), and trades him to Boston, which would go ca-razee with a legacy player they should've drafted in the first place!

My bro's been to Fenway (twice) and Qualcomm, but won't do a minor league game with me. Philistine!

Yeah, playoff games this year haven't gone his way. Vandy got knocked out before making it to Omaha after putting up the best record in school history. Now, Aberdeen falls after winning their first division title in team history. The HBP actually put Mike at 0-3 for the night, & he did get a SB as well.

As far as him playing for Boston, I believe he'd be under way too much pressure there. They actually drafted him back in 2009 straight out of High School.

Boston drafted him and he opted for Vanderbilt. Fair enough. A lot of players will go through the draft at least twice, from what I've seen. I was at the game on Saturday, and I could've sworn he'd had 5 plate appearances.
