I’m gonna be in Philly from 7/25-7/29, so I decided to add these now before I forget to next week.
Bobby Shantz (6/22/2019): Nice! My first return in 17 days! Sent a 1975 Topps MVPs card. Shantz is the oldest living MVP at 93 years old!
Ryne Sandberg (6/24/2019): One of the record-tying 4 successes that day. Great that he signed for free!! I got t on a ‘91 Fleer because (HOT TAKE ALERT) I actually like the design of ‘91 Fleer.
”Curly” Morrison (6/24/2019): The second of 4 successes that day, he is the one I was most excited about. He broke the record for oldest card I’ve gotten signed, as I sent a 1954 Bowman. He also sent me back a few little notes & answered my questions. My questions were:
1). What was it like to play for Wes Fesler [Ohio State Coach from 1947-1950]?
-Great! He was a very good coach! and we had a great stay and Ohio State was the Best university in the country!!
2). What was it like to play for George Halas?
-Halas was very smart, great assistant coaches! Clark Shamace - The T-formation innovator!!!
3). What was the NFL Draft like in 1950? [He was taken 10th overall]
-Didn’t know much about it then? ‘Til I read about it in the papers.
He also wrote a note about Paul Brown on the back of the questions sheet.
“Paul Brown - without a doubt was the greatest of all time as far as coaches go! But that guy up in New England ain’t to bad!
That part made me laugh!
He also put a nice note with the letter.
”IAN- I have a grandson named Ian. I will share your very nice letter with him!
Leo Sanford (6/24/2019): The 3rd of 4 successes that day! He personalized my card and answered my questions.
1). What was it like to play for Curly Lambeau? [Sanford’s rookie year was Lambeau’s last in Chicago]
-Playing for Curly Lambeau was different. Back in his early coaching they didn’t play with a lot of detail and he had a hard time on some of the games!!!
2). What was it like to play in the “Greatest Game Ever Played” [1958 NFL Championship]?
-You knew you were playing in the best game of that time, and it was a great feeling!!! You gave it everything you could do to win!!
Bob Cousy (6/24/2019): My first basketball success!!!!! I now have at least one guy from all the Big 4 sports!! He signed my index card with “To Ian- Thank you for your letter!” and a “Red” inscription. Unfortunately, according to his daughter, “My dad is no longer able to answer questions in depth”. If you plan on writing a letter to him, do NOT ask questions.
This is is long enough so I will make a part 2 shortly.
