January 4th, 2009: @ New York Knicks

Rate this Entry
Earlier tonight, the Boston Celtics were defeated, for only the 6th time this season, by the New York Knicks, by a final score of 100-88. This was the Celtics 5th loss on the road, dropping their road record to 11-5 and their overall record to 29-6. Boston is on a bit of a skid right now, losing 4 of their last 6 games.

The first quarter was a bit of a surprise to the Celtics, as the Knicks led most of the way, but the Celtics closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 25-24. The second quarter was a bit better for Boston as they outscored the Knicks by 4, leading at halftime by a score of 53-50. At this point, it was appearing that the Celtics would start the second half with some strength, and start to pull away, but that wasn't meant to happen tonight. The Knicks outscored the Celtics 28-15 to go up by 10 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Boston certainly could've come back, as 10 points can be made up very quickly, but with the poor play of Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett, going a combined 2/13 from the field, and with Ray Allen shooting 0/9 from 3-point range, the game was not meant to be theirs. New York outscored the Knicks by 2 in the final quarter, 22-20, to win by the final score of 100-88.

Paul Pierce scored 31 points on 10/17 shooting for the Celtics, and that was one of only a few bright spots for Boston tonight. Ray Allen, who has been fairly consistant all season, was 7/18 from the field, with only 16 points. On the defensive side of the ball, Kevin Garnett had a team-high 9 rebounds and a season high 5 blocks.

For New York, Wilson Chandler scored 31 points on 9/19 shooting and 11/12 from the free throw line, and Al Harrington added 30 points on 11/23 shooting, including 5/9 from 3-point range, off the bench. David Lee scored 14 points and pulled down a game high 14 rebounds.

Boston's next game comes on Tuesday, January 6th, at the Charlotte Bobcats.
