Product Preview: 2008/09 Upper Deck Champs

Rate this Entry
Ever since it's announcement, Upper Deck Champs has been getting mixed impressions.

Some collectors consider it a rip-off of the popular Topps offering Allen & Ginter Baseball, while others embrace the product as a truly unique concept that brings a whole new dimension to the hobby.

I am not a baseball collector and I still love Allen & Ginter. I love the concept behind a product based on a traditional design that not only offers the chance to collect players in your chosen sport, but also includes non-sport relic and autograph cards.

Upper Deck Champs will contain a wide variety of inserts for collectors; ranging from mini cards to parallels, memorabilia cards to even prehistoric fossils. The autograph set will feature many of the popular hockey players as well as stars from other sports including Lebron James, but will also feature non-sport subjects like poker player Daniel Negreanu and all three members of the legendary progressive rock band Rush.

There is also a National HIstory Collection insert set, featuring various subjects including animals:

Personally, I am very anxious for this product to launch. Being a dinosaur buff as a kid, the idea of pulling and collecting fossils and dinosaur bones excites me to no end. After skimming through the preliminary checklist and seeing that my favorite dinosaur, Velociraptor, is included in the artifacts set, I could hardly contain myself.

Some may think the concept behind Champs is far-fetched and way beyond the normal scope of hockey collecting, but I think the product will serve as a fresh addition to a hobby in desperate need of variety.

And who could really resist the chance to own a piece of a dinosaur?
