Lou Holtz, the national title-winning college football coach who famously led Notre Dame in the 1980s and 1990s, has passed away at 89 in Orlando, Florida.

A cause of death has not been revealed, but Holtz had recently been placed into hospice care. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Beth, and survived by his four children, nine grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He will be best remembered for rebuilding a historic Notre Dame football program and turning the Fighting Irish into a perennial title contender. Holtz also became a symbol of success for catholic sports fans across the country, many of whom rooted for Notre Dame regardless of how far they may have lived from the South Bend, Indiana campus.

The West Virginia native 'rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected figures in college athletics,' read a statement from his family.

'Holtz is remembered for his enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others,' the statement continued.

'His influence extended far beyond the football field through the Holtz Charitable Foundation and the many players, colleagues, and communities shaped by his leadership.'

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore has been declared dead in Indiana.

The 25-year-old New Albany, Indiana resident was found in his garage with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, New Albany police chief Todd Bailey said in a statement.

'The New Albany Police Department is conducting a death investigation at 1611 Ekin Av in New Albany,' read the statement. 'Rondale Moore (age 25) was found deceased in the garage of the property of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

'The New Albany Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation no additional information will be released at this time.'

The Floyd County Coroner said an autopsy has been scheduled.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has finally won MVP honors, beating out New England's Drake Maye, Buffalo's Josh Allen, Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence and San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey.

'Kelly, you're unbelievable,' Stafford said, accepting the award by thanking his wife. 'What you do for our family, the way you support me, the way you support these kids.'

Significantly, the 37-year-old Stafford also took the moment to reveal his planned return for the 2026 season.

'You're unbelievable cheerleaders for me,' he told his four identically dressed daughters, who'd joined him on stage. 'I appreciate it. I am so happy to have you at the games on the sideline with me, and I can't wait for you to cheer me on next year when we're out there kicking ™™™.'

Although his season came to a bitter end with a loss to Seattle in the NFC championship, Stafford spent the 2025 regular season leading the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, while finishing second to Maye with a 109.2 passer rating.

In the end, Stafford edged the Patriots quarterback with 24 first-place votes to Maye's 23 in the closest race since Peyton Manning and Steve McNair were co-winners in 2003.

Washington Redskins icon and NFL Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen has died at the age of 91.

While a cause was not disclosed, a Commanders spokesperson confirmed they learned of the legendary quarterback's death on Friday morning.

His family said in a statement: 'We are enormously proud of his amazing life and accomplishments on the field, marked not only by a golden arm, but also a fearless spirit and intellect that earned him a place among the legends in Canton.

'But to those of us who knew him beyond the stadium lights, he was the steady, humorous, and deeply loving heart of our family.

'He lived with deep appreciation for the teammates, colleagues, and friends he met along the way. While he has taken his final snap, his legacy will remain an indelible part of the city he loved and the family he built.

'We are comforted by the knowledge that he brought joy to so many. This weekend as we enjoy the game that he loved so much, join us and raise a glass, share a story and a smile, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who was, to us, the greatest of all time.'
