VIENNA — On the crowded cobblestone streets of Austria’s largest city, the locals largely ignore the 6-foot-6 hockey player in their midst.

The anonymity is an elixir for Hugh Jessiman. In 2003, the Rangers selected him in the first round of the N.H.L. draft. Nicknamed the Huge Specimen, he was a goal-scoring forward who was born in New York and grew up in Connecticut. It was easy to imagine his imposing frame on a billboard towering above Broadway.
