Hi y’all.My name isHerman and I am a card-a-holic. 😊
So I recently got back into collecting.I began collecting cards in ’87 with mydad.That year my grandfather passed andmy dad and I began putting together the topps baseball set.I bet he bought 3000 cards over the course ofthat season (I probably shop lifted a couple without him knowing about it) andwe sorted cards daily.To this day I amstill a card or two short, which I may finish one day, but mostly I mention it becauseit was some of the best times I can remember spending with my dad.He is gone now and I hope that my daughterand I get to share some collecting experiences, maybe going to a show or twoand just that kind of stuff in general.Iknow it is mostly a boy’s thing but perhaps we’ll get into tennis cards, who knows.Aside from just the time I was able to spendwith dad the other thing I really enjoyed was trading cards with friends atschool.I probably have a small handfulof cards that I bought outside of packs, and for me that really was not how Iliked building my collection.We don’thave card shows here like we used to and so I found this group hoping to find atrading place online.It looks as thoughmost collectors here are buying and trading autographed cards and game usedcards (I think that is what GU is) and I don’t have much of that stuff.I am hoping there are some people that stillcollect just regular cards.Most of mycollection is worthless stuff from the late 80’s and early 90’s.That’s ok with me.The good thing is, is that I can completesome of those sets with literally pennies and hopefully some trades.We’ll see.
I’ll say this the one card that I have always wanted andnever came across is a ’77 Andre Dawson.The year is when I was born which is just a coincidence.We got cable around the same time I startedcollecting which meant we went from 3 channels to 12.One of those channels was WGN out of Chicagoand they played the Cubs practically every home game.I remember watching the White Sox too(probably when the Cubs where out of town) but Andre Dawson was THEexcitement.I wouldn’t call the Cubs myfavorite team, that was just who I got to watch (almost every day duringbaseball season) when I first got into baseball; and they played the Astrosfairly regularly back then too.But Icould always appreciate the game play of Dawson and Sandberg (I’ll be lookingfor one of his RC next).
Just so folks know, I can appreciate a cool card in anycondition (which will make those two I mentioned easy pickups).I’ve never been into collecting for thepurpose of increasing value.Me buyinggraded cards will probably never be something I am into.Again, fortunately this means that I get tohave some cards that I like without worrying about breaking any banks, not thatI intend on actually buying any.I amlikely to pick up packs here and there so if there are any packs out thereworth picking up or looking out for let me know.I haven’t gotten that far back in to be decidingwhat is worth taking a chance on.Justgrabbing some here and there.That’sabout it.Looking forward to thediscussions.
