Despite all the million-dollar sports treasures that generate headlines, I have been laboring under the misapprehension that the memorabilia industry is largely a mom and pop operation. Many of the high-profile auction houses I regularly write about are staffed with just a half-dozen employees. Sports card shows, where huge deals go down, still take place in the same old gymnasiums and meetings halls that they did 35 years ago. (I’ve been going since the first shows in the early 1970s in New York City when I was a boy.)
