Rachel,
We all started somewhere with the hobby and there usually that moment in which we decided to collect and why. Nothing better than having memories of you and your grandfather talking sports as it definitely a way a girl can relate to men in this world. What sport or stuff do you collect. Money is not so much a important part of the hobby but can be intrinsically valuable especially when it brings you closer to someone, a game you attended, etc. As the other have said if you have any questions feel free to ask. As this site is so large there are many cool features that can be used to make the hobby even a little easier if you know them.

Welcome. There are some women in the hobby -- I've been in it since I was a little girl, too, and I've been trading online for over 20 years now. Basketball is my favorite sport -- the one I watch the most, and the one I collect the most. I also used to play it when I was younger. :)

That's what it's all about. I was introduced to the hobby when I was young by my older sister's boyfriend and will never forget that.
I don't think many of us have friends that are collectors. It's kind of a closet thing for me. My friends know I collect, but they have no idea what that entails. And some of my co-workers may know, but again same thing. It's kind of an outlet, just for ME.
One thing I would advise as a collector is picking your niche. There is so much different product out there today that it's easy to get overwhelmed. If you want to build sets I would start with something simple, like the Topps flagship Baseball. Nothing too complicated, with SP's or anything. If you want to collect players or teams make sure you really narrow it down and focus on that or else it can spiral out of control, and the next thing you know you're collecting everything.
Welcome aboard, and good luck.
