The Ottawa Senators have traded pending unrestricted free agent Matt Duchene and defenceman Julius Bergman to the Columbus Blue Jackets, TSN Hockey Insiders Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie report.
Dreger adds that there will be no contract extension talks at this time and the Blue Jackets, whose pending UFAs include Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky, are loading up for the playoffs. He reported earlier that forward prospects Vitaly Abramov and Jonathan Davidsson were expected to be part of the return to Ottawa.

Pretty big deal.... but they really need to get into the 7th slot, to avoid TB.

Ottawa should look at changing management before anything else happens. This was a team that was 1 goal away from the Stanley Cup finals two years ago and now rock bottom.

Since then they have had the following players moved,

    Erik Karlsson
    Derick Brassard
    Mike Hoffman
    Dion Phanuef
    Kyle Turris
    Matt Duchene
    Mark Methot
    Jason Spezza
    Ben Bishop
    along with many younger prospects

IMO it's mind boggling that now Stone, Ceci and Dzingel could be moved by Monday. Along with Colorado getting possibly a top 3 pick.

They have moved too many younger up and coming players for older depth guys like Hoffman, Zibajendad, Silfverberg, Dahlen and Tkachuk.

    Imagine this lineup in Ottawa

    Hoffman Zibajendad Silfverberg
    Dzingel Turris Stone

Teams need to be more patient and build like Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Washington did through 2000's, and how Boston, Tampa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto are doing now with quality drafting. Not like Edmonton who messes up most of their first round draft picks. Vancouver is on the right track with Boeser, Horvat, Pettersson, Hughes.

I think Carolina is on the right track now as well with Aho leading the way. All it takes is one good draft pick or two to change the whole organization for the next 5 years. Look at the Islanders pick of Barzal or Tampa's selection of Point.

Ottawa should be embarrassed with how it has come to this.

Does Columbus have enough cap space to be able to resign Duchene, Panarin and Bobrovsky now?

It's pretty much a certainty that Panarin and Bobrovsky are gonna test free agency on July 1st. I would be shocked if either of them is a Blue Jacket in 2019-20.

As a Hawks fan, I have had a strong suspicion that Bowman's plan all along after trading Panarin for Saad was to re-sign Panarin as a UFA in the summer of 2019, and that Panarin is fully aware and on board with this plan..

It's what Bowman does, he trades players for cap reasons then brings them back when he's in a better cap situation - and this summer Bowman will have plenty of cap space and money to spend... Tho the Hawks could really use a legitimate top 4/5 defenseman..

But yea, I honestly believe Panarin will be a Blackhawk on July 1st....

Panarin loved Chicago and playing with Kane, he was nothing BUT smiles the 2 years he was here, and if the Hawks can improve on defense they will be one dangerous team next season... The Hawks have no problems putting the puck in the net, their problem is keeping it out - add Panarin to this offense (again) and the Hawks could run 3 legitimate #1 scoring lines and 1 strong shutdown line - and that will create real problems for opposing teams line matchups...

If It matters I've been saying Panarin back to Chicago since the day he was traded... I had the same feeling when Bowman traded Saad the first time... The moves didn't make any sense other than for cap reasons.

I heard Nashville was in on it too.... Would have been funny if Duchene ended up in Nashville given the Deuchene gongshow from last TDL..
