Hockey's surge in popularity pushes the sport's gatekeepers into court
Youth hockey is a growth market in the Chicago area, but it's anything but a free market.
That's the chief beef in a pair of federal antitrust complaints filed in recent weeks challenging the authority and structure of Amateur Hockey Association Illinois, or AHAI, the nonprofit governing body of organized amateur hockey statewide. The lawsuits from unrelated parties attack AHAI from different angles, but with a common allegation: that the people who run it are unfairly stifling new clubs from forming in an effort to keep a stranglehold over the youth hockey market.

There is no reason there should be a limit to the number of Tier 1 teams in Illinois. There are plenty of talented players and if they can't recruit enough good players in that 5th team, then they will need to fold
