Detroit Red Wings legend Ted Lindsay dies

DETROIT (WOOD) — Detroit Red Wings legend Ted Lindsay has died, according to reports.

WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit, reports Lindsay died at the age of 93.

Lindsay played in the NHL for 17 year, 14 of which for the Detroit Red Wings. He was a nine-time all-star, pairing with Gordie Howe to lead them to four Stanley Cups in the 1950s.

The Canadian-born player retired in 1965.

This is a developing story. Check back with woodtv.com for updates.

Not only a legend for the Red Wings, but also to the game.

A great player but also a great person who went to the next level in support of his fellow NHL players, Ted was instrumental in helping establish the NHL Players Association to ensure that their labour rights would be respected. The players we respect from the game we love are better off today than they were a generation or two ago, and it is in large part due to the PA. The players established an award to be presented each year to the League’s most outstanding player—the Ted Lindsay Award is the only NHL award that is voted on exclusively by the players, so winning that is a true sign of respect from your peers.

    RIP Ted Lindsay.
