Panini America First Look 2019 Elite Football

It says something about the staying power of a brand when it can last for more than 20 years as a viable, vibrant staple on the football card landscape. But that’s exactly what the venerable Elite Football franchise has accomplished. To be sure, it’s come a long way since debuting in 1996 as a “limited” insert numbered to “just” 10,000. Today, the product is a fixture for football fans and collectors seeking their new-season fix in the heat of the summer. For the 2019 Elite Football release, Panini America officials are injecting the product with a delicious dose of history (the 100-card 1999 Elite insert), an abundance of new (the first trading cards featuring new rookies in their NFL uniforms) and a little bit of everything in between.
Release Date: June 26, 2019
Product Configuration: Five cards per pack, 20 packs per box, 12 boxes per case.
Box Break: Two autographs, one memorabilia card, six parallels and three Rookie Cards per box, on average.

Donruss Elite was created in 1999 by the Donruss Trading Card Company. In 2009 Panini purchased all of their assets. In 2012 they dropped Donruss from the name to imply that it is actually Panini that is Elite.

I always thought it was weird that Panini refers to their creative department as "officials". Must be some weird Italian thing.

I used to think it was weird to keep seeing long retired veterans alongside rookies and stars in sets. The constant reaching back into Panini's past acquisitions is much, much worse.

Would love to see what is actually new after Tracy (ahem, the blog contributor "paniniamerica" and TOTALLY not Tracy) spent the entirety of this blog post up until the point polishing the knob of the historical greatness of Donruss Elite.

Remember when Prizm Draft Picks and Contenders Draft Picks got dunked on by Score? No?

And then Luminance came out and took a massive steaming dump on Score's bragging rights.

Now here comes Donruss Elite to make the bragging rights of Luminance a hollow marketing ploy. I can't wait for Score Optic to come out with rookies in running poses to make Elite a non-start in the rookie department.

To be clear, before the segway into the new rookies bit, the two preceding ideas to this inane sentence was "a delicious dose of history" and "an abundance of new". What is between history and new? IN THE INTEREST OF TIME TELL ME!!!!

Let's see, what kind of inserts are here. Hmm, Field Vision, yesI remember that last year. Ahah, Spellbound, also done in prior years. Die cuts, of course, always popular in the Elite set. Elite Coverage, that sounds new. But the jersey pieces look as old and event worn as the day is long. Oh sweet, check this out!

It's called Elite Company and it ties 5 seemingly rando players together from the same college. A new insert set that surely was a reject from the Prizm and Contenders Draft Picks product.



When people refer to the "Sadness Factory" no longer will it be Cleveland; it'll be Panini. Churning out more sets designed to cash in on collector's nostalgia. I'm surprised Panini hasn't considered running this through their Optichrome tech to double the sales. It's really a bummer to see the corpses all my favorite brands become zombies through Panini's Photoshop copy/paste necromancy. Don't fall for the Elite 1%, let's drain this swamp and move on to innovative sets.
