Weird for sure. I know he’s got a deal with Fanatics but that’s never prevented anyone from signing cards in the past unless it’s some new category of exclusive. I’ll ask around and see if I can unearth anything.

It could be a money thing for sure, but could it also be that he has little interest in signing? Maybe his camp is working on a deal for him to sign as little as possible, but Upper Deck wants to get him to sign as much as he possibly can in order to push product. Maybe they are trying to find a happy medium here or somewhere along this lines.

I'm guessing UD asked him to sign autographs, offered him very little money for it (like they typically do for rookies) and he said "no thanks". Nothing more to it than that.

There is no rule that says a player must sign for a card company. If the card company won't pay them enough to make it worth their while..... they're not going to sign.

I think the PA leans on rookies a little bit to get them to sign a full slate of autos (or less, if they're asked for less) but there's only so much pushing they can do. If the kid doesn't want to sign, they can't make him do it.

Damn you're all right - Dahlin doesn't have any auto'd cards ..... Thee are plenty of pucks and photos tho.

On a side note I did almost win his SP GU base rookie card.... I lot it at the last second tho... SMH... I kind regret not going a little higher to win that bad boy...

Here is a thought tho..... Maybe he just doesn't want to sign hockey cards.... I mean, with all of these auto's out there - have any of you ever wondered how much time hockey players (or any athlete in general) spends a week signing cards? it has to be a lot of time.... I mean I'm sure these dudes spend a significant amount of time just signing stuff for various card companies.... And then you have to sign stuff for the fans on top of that at personal appearances...

But I'm sure Dahlin has signed a few cards for fans .....

It is a lot, and I don't think most mind, but it can be very time consuming.

My cousin is in the NHL and has signed cards for Upper Deck. He doesn't mind the extra pay day.

I could see a huge rookie like Dahlin though taking a pass on the autograph deals. He has enough on his plate and I've heard is really painfully shy, so I could see him not wanting to deal with the UD reps and stuff like that. It doesn't happen often a top rookie doesn't sign, but I could totally see it.

Well, since I got back into collecting and have accumulated so many autographs of all of these players it really boggles my mind just how much these kids have to sign.... You gotta remember it's just not one series or subset or even brand it's a TON of stuff.... And they do get paid well, but signing all these cards really has to be time consuming.... And I know the demand for different players is different depending on your status in the sport and where you were drafted or how well you're known due to your success and how popular you are but.... After a while you can only sign so much - especially if you take pride in your penmanship lol.......

And here is another interesting thing - at least for me - I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and it really sucks because if you manually write for too long (or even type) then your hand goes numb... So perhaps that's a reason why Dahlin doesn't sign? who knows, it's all speculation, lol... Of course he could also be jerk??, lol.. I'm sure he has his reasons, and I'm sure his reasons are benevolent and rational.....

    It's money, and volume.

Upper Deck would be asking him to sign 1000s of autographs.

Look at Matt Barzal's Autographs in 2016-17 (when he got Rookie Cards. I picked him because he was rookie of the year last season).

    https://www.sportscardforum.com/scf/...rchleagueid/0/

If you add up the serial numbers, he signed 5,800 cards! That's not including 11 more non-serial numbered cards (some of which are likely rare, like the SP Authentic Black FWA... others are very plentiful, like OPC Platinum).

Also consider that they typically sign more stickers than UD is going to use that year, so they've got a supply for the following season. It's why you see autographed cards of players that have barley played in 3 years make their way into sets. (often refereed to as a "sticker dump"). I don't think I'm being crazy, suggesting that Barzal probably signed 7,500 autographs for UD for the 16-17 season.... and he played all of 2 games that year.

They were likely paying him no more than $3 per auto (rookies, typically don't get a lot). Why do you think Eichel, Patrick, & Hischerer signed exclusives with Leaf?? UD was willing to pay big bucks for McDavid... but he's the exception to the rule. Leaf offers something WAY out of whack with what UD pays a normal top prospect, so UD wouldn't match.

Now: If Barzal was getting $3 an auto, and signed 7,500 of them, in a season when he only played 2 NHL games... that was probably a really nice deal for him. He would have had his signing bonus in the bank, but he wouldn't have been making much else. I think they might have upped the OHL stipends to $100 /2k. I have zero clue what his family's finances are like - but at that point in time, I bet the extra money was welcomed.

Dahlin? He was playing pro in Sweden before being drafted, so he would have already earned a real pay cheque. He's also playing in the NHL (granted, that's the same for a lot of rookies that do sign). If Dahlin really finds the whole process to be a pain in the butt, and doesn't really want to do it.... an extra $25k (which is probably more than UD would have been paying him) when he's making about a million, before bonuses, isn't exactly enough to sway him.

.... and UD has to be careful. If Dhalin says "I was the #1 pick. I want $10 per auto" - you can be sure that will set a precedent for more guys. Does the #2 pick get the same as the #240 pick still?

Having said all of that...... I expect they will get him to sign for a few sets.
