    Tia and Tobie's Race Adventure

Tia is a seventeen year old from California. She is very happy with her life. She has a very loving and wonderful family. There is nothing that they would not do for her. She has everything and anything she could ever want except one thing. She loves NASCAR and would love to go to a race. She has loved NASCAR since she was around seven years old. None of her friends except for one understood the obsession. Every weekend Tia and her best friend, Tobie, watched the races on television. They both loved the same drivers. Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne, and Brian Vickers were and still are their favorites. Tia and Tobie were born within a week of each other. They always have their birthday parties together on a day in between the two days. All they really wanted was tickets to the race at the California Speedway two weeks from their birthday. Their parents bought them each a ticket but were not very happy about them going by themselves. They would have rather the girls stay at home than go but eventually decided to let them go. The two girls jumped with excitement thanking their parents.

They could not believe they were actually going to a race. After thanking their parents over and over again they began to plan the trip. They wondered about what they should wear, what they would say to a driver if they should meet one, and many other things. They decided that they would leave on the Thursday afternoon before the race. On Friday they would go to the Nextel Cup qualifying. Saturday would be a more eventful day. They would go to the final practice for Nextel Cup, the Busch qualifying, and the Busch race. On Sunday they would go to the Nextel Cup race. For the next two weeks were very rough for the two girls. They did not think about or talk about anything but the race. They drove their families and friends crazy. The days dragged on and on lasting for what seemed like forever. After being packed and ready to go for two weeks, the time had finally come. Before leaving though they thanked their parents again. The girls started their drive to the race. The drive lasted about five hours. The girls arrived at their motel around eight thirty that night. They checked in and quickly fell asleep. The drive had exhausted them.

The next morning they headed off to the race track. They got there just in time for the Nextel Cup qualifying. This was a very exciting thing for these two girls because they have always watched it on television and now they are actually getting to experience it. After qualifying Tia and Tobie hung around the track hoping to get a glance of one of their favorite drivers. Before long, they did spot Kasey Kahne off in the distance. The next day was just as exciting. They watched the final practice for Sunday’s race. Every time Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, and Brian Vickers sped past them, they cheered. Afterwards while the track was being cleaned up for Busch qualifying, Tia and Tobie decided to go to Burger King for lunch. They did not expect what happened next. After walking in, Tia turned to Tobie and whispered, “Oh my gosh! Brian Vickers is sitting right over there!” They quickly ordered their food and sat at the table directly behind him. Tia, being the outgoing fun one, threw a French fry at Brian’s head. The girls began to giggle. Brian then turned around smiling and yelled, “Hey!” He then threw a French fry back at the girls. Before it could turn into a food fight, Tobie jumped in and said, “Good job during practice today, Brian.” After a short conversation it was time for Brian to head back to the track.

Qualifying for the day’s Busch race was underway. They would not pay much attention to it though. They just could not keep their minds off of what happened during lunch. Before the race actually got started, the NASCAR president made a very big announcement. “Whoever has seats twenty five and twenty six,” he began, “will be our flag wavers for tomorrow’s Nextel Cup race.” Tia and Tobie did not think that they would be the winners, but they were. They began jumping up and down with excitement. They could not believe their luck. How could all these great things be happening to them? They did not know what to think. They were so shocked. Their day got even better when Kasey Kahne won the race. Before leaving the track, Tia and Tobie talked with the NASCAR president about tomorrow’s event. They were told to be at the track at nine thirty the next morning to attend the drivers meeting. Upon returning to the motel, they called their parents to tell them the great news. That night they could not sleep because of the day’s events. Finally, they got to sleep around midnight.

The next morning was very bright and sunny. There was not a cloud in the sky. It was already around eighty degrees. They knew it would be a very hot day. After arriving at the track the girls met with the NASCAR president. He took them to the meeting room and seated them to the side. A few minutes later, drivers started pouring in, Tony Stewart and JJ Yeley being the first ones. Denny Hamlin and Reed Sorenson followed. As soon as all forty three drivers were seated and quiet the meeting began. Rules and all questions concerning the race were answered. Before releasing the drivers, Tia and Tobie were introduced. After making it up to the stage, the two started screaming and jumping. The whole room roared with laughter. They soon realized what they were doing and that everyone was laughing at them and quickly calmed themselves down. Although a few of the younger drivers were still laughing the meeting went on.

Tia and Tobie were taught how to hold and wave the flag. Although they did not need these lessons because they always practiced this at home incase of something like that happening, they went along with it. Now their years of practice will be put to good use. A few hours later it was finally time to start the race. When they heard, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” they knew it was almost time to wave the flag and got a little bit nervous. They were standing there thinking to themselves, “This is actually happening, I’m actually standing right here, all of those drivers are really right below me waiting to start the race.” While standing up in the flag stand they felt the wind blow through their hair and the sun beating down on their tanned arms. The time had finally come. The moment they had been waiting for. As the cars came around they let the flag drop. They gave it forty three waves, one for each of the drivers. They eventually made their way to their seats. They sat there cheering every time one of their favorite drivers zoomed past them. One hundred twenty four laps into the race Jimmie Johnson spun out into the wall bring out a caution right in front of Tia and Tobie. Greg Biffle was also in the wreck. Both cars were taken to the garage. The damages were too bad to finish the race. They were both very happy about Jimmie Johnson being out because he is their least favorite driver. After the track was cleaned up the race continued. Kasey Kahne had finally made his way to second spot after starting in the very back. With their eyes opened widely, Tia and Tobie watched with excitement.

The sky now grew very dark and gray with clouds rolling in from every direction. It started to sprinkle. The race kept going. A huge thunder storm had blown up from the south within minutes of the clouds. With just one hundred two laps left, the race was red flagged. Everyone thought the thunder storm would quickly pass and the race would continue. That was not the case. The thunder storm lasted for about two hours. The teams slowly pushed the cars back to the garages. The race would continue the following Monday. Being the flag wavers, Tia and Tobie received permission to hang out in the garage areas. They quickly caught up with Greg Biffle’s crew. They chatted with Greg’s crew chief Mike for a while. Having this red flag would give the team plenty of time to work on the car and get it back to good racing condition. Greg will finish the race after all. This made Tia and Tobie very happy. Without even realizing it, Tia shouted out, “Can we meet Greg?” She had not meant to ask that but it just kind of spilled from her mouth. The words echoed in Tia’s ears. She could not believe she had asked that. Frozen with fear both girls waited patiently for an answer. They were shocked when Mike said, “Sure.” They were soon headed to the back area of the garage. When they walked into the small room, Greg was sitting behind a desk obviously thinking about the day’s race. He got up and greeted them. Mike said he would go and let them talk. At first they did not know what to say. Would talking about the race upset Greg? What would Greg want to talk about? Soon enough they were all engaged in a conversation about animals. Greg suggested the girls go meet his Boxer, Foster. Foster was a very nice dog. Tia and Tobie absolutely loved him.

After chatting with Greg and petting his dog the girls were on their way. Greg offered his golf cart to them to go around without having to walk. Of course, they took the opportunity to use it. They then went in search of Kasey Kahne. They had no luck the first couple of minutes but then spotted him. He was standing beneath the garage roof watching the rain. Not watching where they were going they ran into Elliott Sadler on the golf cart. He was instantly knocked down. Tia and Tobie leaped from the golf cart and Kasey Kahne ran over to help. It was just a little knock and Elliott was unharmed. After apologizing they were headed to Kasey’s garage with him. They all just sat around talking and just hanging out with one another. They could not stay long because they had to return Greg’s golf cart.

Before leaving they ran into Brain again for the second time that weekend. This made them very happy. He said a bunch of his friends and himself were going out for pizza and then heading back to his bus to play video games and watch movies. He asked Tia and Tobie if they would like to come along. Of course, without thought, they both agreed to tag along saying, “Sure, we would love to come!” The pizza idea soon turned into a big food fight. Tia threw a pepperoni at Brian’s friend. They were soon kicked out of the restaurant. That did not stop them from having fun. They went back to the bus for games and movies. First they raced on NASCAR ’06 Total Team Control on the Play Station Two. Tobie won the first few races. She has had lots of practice with this game. She plays it every day at her house.

After watching a movie Tia and Tobie thought it was time to leave. It was getting pretty late and they had to get up early the next morning. Before leaving, Brian offered race car driving lessons. Both girls accepted his offer. They did not sleep much that night, but were still up bright and early in the morning. The day was a bit cloudy but free of rain. The cars slowly made their way back onto the track with only one hundred one laps left. Kasey Kahne led most of rest of the race. Towards the end though, his tire went flat and he could not finish the race. Denny Hamlin ended up winning. Tia and Tobie, not being very big fans of Denny, still went down to congratulate him.

A few hours later they were headed back home. When they arrived at Tobie’s house Tia’s parents was there waiting. They told them everything about what happened that weekend. Their parents were glad that they let them go after all because they had such a good time. The next day at school everyone heard about their wonderful weekend. Everyone was jealous of them, even people that did not even like NASCAR. For once, Tia and Tobie were the most popular kids at school.

Two weeks later, Tia got a phone call from Brian. They set up a time, day, and place for the race car driving lessons. They agreed on the following weekend. Tia and Tobie had spring break and all the drivers had an off weekend. It was a perfect time for lessons. Tia and Tobie made their way back to the California Speedway. This time they were even more excited. At first both girls were extremely nervous and scared to get into the car. Every single car part and its purpose was explained to them by Brian’s crew chief. Racing procedures and tips were also discussed. Each one was driven about ten times around the track before actually driving themselves. They took a thirty minute lunch break. When they got back, Tia was the first to drive. She was very confident and could not wait. She got all suited up and strapped into the car. She zoomed around the track as Tobie waited her turn standing by the track. Tia gets out of the car telling Tobie how fun it was and what a great experience it was. Tobie is a little bit hesitant to start onto the track but after reassurance from both Brian and Tia she starts onto the track. After completing her laps, she knew exactly what Tia was saying. It was the best time she had ever had. The car was pushed back to the garage where Tia was waiting.

After talking for a while they all decided to race against each other. So two more cars were brought out and lined up. The first to complete thirty five laps would win. Tia was very aggressive, which gave her the win. Afterwards they thanked Brain for taking time to teach them. He told them that they both did an excellent job and invited them back another time.

The next morning Tia and Tobie was headed home. Neither said much of anything on the drive back. They already knew what the other was thinking and did not need to say it. They have had the best time of their lives within the past three weeks and would love to do it all again. Both Tia and Tobie’s parents were at Tia’s house waiting for the girls to return. While pulling into the driveway they were greeted with hugs and kisses. They told them all about what had happened. Neither one stopped talking for hours. The next day at school was very interesting for both girls. They told everyone about how they got to drive with Brian. Now Tia and Tobie were the most popular girls at school and they liked that. They are planning to go to Charlotte, North Carolina over the summer. They will surely have a wonderful time no matter what happens. They can not wait until the next racing adventure.
