Mats Sundin says he won't play in 2010 Olympics

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Vancouver Canucks center Mats Sundin says he will not play for defending champion Sweden at the Vancouver Olympics in February.

"There will be no Olympics in Vancouver for me next year," Sundin said in a story on the Web site of the Swedish newspaper Expressen.

The 38-year-old Sundin, who played for the Vancouver Canucks last season after spending most of his NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, was one of Sweden's key players in the 2006 Turin Olympics. Sweden beat Finland in the final for its second gold since 1994.

"I will not change my mind," he told Expressen. "I think it's time that the next generation takes over. We have many good players."

I really would have thought he was a lock for the Olympics when he signed in Vancouver. Seriously, why the heck would he not finish off his career with what could be a decent Olympic run? Unless he figures the rest gives him a better shot at the Cup...but still.

I would guess that's exactly what it is. If he's going to play another year, it's to win The Cup. Taking the couple weeks off will go a long way to keeping his healthy for the whole season.

Sundin didn't impress me last winter. From his taking time off to his actual play. He's making the right decision to stay home. It's in Sweden's best interest.
