No they can't. NMC means he can't be placed on waivers, even for the purposes of a buyout.

Even if they could.... that might be a better deal for Fleury than the Pens:

Penguins would have to pay him 2/3s of what they owe him, spread out over twice the term. He's owed 5.75 million per year, for 2 more years.... so 11.5 million total, they would have to pay (roughly) 7.66 million, and eat a cap hit of 1.92 million for 4 years... making him a UFA.

Fleury could then go anywhere and should easily be able to make up for the lost $4 million.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, and I probably am. I don't follow the dollars and cents end much, but could Pittsburgh waive him for the purpose for a buyout? Or at least play dirty and imply it? Or is it too risky? I mean, it's risky doing pretty much ANYTHING in this situation, but there has to be some way something happens...

I could be out to lunch here but could not Pittsburgh grease his palm and say here is 2 million for you to wave your NMC.
He would be 2 million up then Pitts could expose him in the draft and maybe find a trade partner. Either way he gets his contact monies and a 2 million bonus and has a chance to play in the best league in the world

I'm not exactly sure about the rules.... so wouldn't say yes or no if they can do something like that - I suspect that they could not do something like that, but I'm certain if it were allowed (add in an extra bonus, mid contract) it would count against the cap.
