Why do the Montreal Canadiens Goaltending Suck So Bad?

Goals Against Per Game Rank: 24/32
    Save Percentage Rank: 26/32
    Shutouts this season: Only 1

Dobes GAA:: 40th out of the 59 goalies who qualify
Dobes SV%: 46th out of the 59 goalies who qualify

Montembeault GAA: 53rd out of the 59 goalies who qualify
Montembeault GAA: 55th out of the 59 goalies who qualify

These numbers are so bad that there are even Canuck goalies with better numbers than this!

You had a chance to acquire a goaltender during the trade deadline and you blew it!!!!!

    you blew it

I guess ya gotta find something.

The title of this thread is actually something that is brought up multiple times a day in reddit threads and Facebook groups and casual conversations I have with my co-workers. LOL

It has been abysmal this year watching Monty constantly allow beach balls from the point on the first shot of the game get behind him. It puts the team behind in the game and it always seems to happen at the worst possible time. Then he'll come make 2-3 saves that level off his Goals Against Expected % before letting in another floater. The game last night should have been two points, and he cost them that.

It's becoming a weekly meme amongst us now to ponder out loud, "We had Carey Price for 15 years and imagine him backstopping this squad." It's really cool now that we can score 5 goals a game. It's much less cool that we have to score 5 goals a game.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Crazy stat: when Montreal’s goalies allow three or fewer goals, the record is 31-2-3.

They’ve played 62 games now. Which means in 26 games they’ve allowed 4+. That’s tough to overcome.

There's probably several reasons why they didn't acquire a goalie. Management won't come right out and say this, but the team isn't a serious contender yet. Adding a moderately better goalie won't move the needle much. Fowler will hopefully be ready for next year. Stay the course.

Maybe the goalies aren't the best, but there is a problem with the defense too. Savard was great at blocking shoots, nobody took this role. Also, their only d-man playing a physical game is Xhekaj, with about 8 minutes per game. No one else is clearing the zone around the net, body-checking a lot and playing hard.

    Yes but not for long.
Montreal is the youngest team, have lots of prospects in the pipeline and will have lots of cap space once Laine and I believe Price is still on there. Could be wrong on Price
In 2 to 4 years they will be a true cup contender if Dobes keeps progressing or they wind up getting a #1 in net if he fails to develop. Would have loved to see this habs team with a Price in his prime. Dynasty I would say.
Can not put my faith in a goalie that cries after losses.
Now not dealing with the media. Probably for the best as he needs to grow and mature. He will continue to do this.
Once playoffs start things will tighten up and goals will not come as freely for Montreal.
I expect lots of tears from Dobes during the playoffs.

Reminds me a bit when Price crapped his pants in his first playoffs. Halak helped bail them out but not enough. Who is going to bail out Dobes?

Don't get me wrong the Canadians have a great team and will have a true cup contender in a couple years for years to come.

You, me and every Habs fan under the sun. LOL

In all his years, the Habs had one player reach PPG status...once. It was Kovalev, in Carey's rookie year. This current roster with better goaltending (sorry, Monty) would be 1st in the East this season. But it's all part of the maturation process. There have been many more enjoyable nights than not. And it's so much more exciting to see this team with the ability to regularly pop 4+ goals per game instead of getting two and leaving the rest to Carey.
