Kovalchuk Collectors-What will you do with your collection?

When I first found out about his retirement I was in shock to say the least. I was sitting on my couch with my tablet and boom i get a notification from BR team stream that Kovy retired. Pretty much out of left field.

At this point in time many of us have 2 options

    1. Keep our Kovy collection and marvel them every once in a while.
    2 Sell our collection

So like the title states, what will you do? If there is another option unique to you, feel free to share the path you plan on taking.

***note*** please don't let this thread turn into a nhl vs Khl / KHL sucks / Russians are this and that thread. There is a time and place for that and my thread is not created for that so i expect this thread to be carried out in a productive and positively insightful manner.

Personal Update (7/13/13): On my end, though I still have some mixed emotions towards the situation. I came to the conclusion (with the help of others in this thread) that I still love my collection independent of the situation that surrounds it. Each card i buy, regardless of the player, represents the hard work i put into obtaining that card, the networking it took to find it and my passion for the sport of hockey. It is for those reasons, among a few others that i always plan to never sell and grow old with each card i buy. However I was tested by this situation, of course i was a bit angry when i found out about it and just like anything that involves emotions, things are a bit confusing when it first hits you. However through talking with others here and hearing their experiences, especially from theBoxBreaker, i was able to regain most of my love for my collection that I am still proud of. Will i still collect Kovalchuk and pursue hiim heavily? No. There is no doubt that my Kovy pc went down my totem pole in regards to adding to it. Will i still be excited if his Premier Signatures black auto /5 or his BAP Jersey auto /10 shows up? HELL YES!!! These are cards that I covet and will still go for it should it pop up. Will i pay the same amount that i was willing to before? No, since advancing this pc is not a priority, i will not spend money on it as if it was. Having said all of this, my Kovy PC will still be "available" to sell as a lot only. Its all or nothing for me. If no one ever wants it, i'm more than glad to keep it because of the reasons i mentioned above. If someone miraculously wants it and is willing to offer a somewhat reasonable price, then yes I will sell it and redirect that money to start a personal fund for my 02/03 Henrik Zetterberg super rookie /15. The card that started my craze in collecting hockey, and the ultimate card that will end it for me. I personally think that is reasonable. Some may say, "hey thats still selling your collection, or trying to seek financial gain from it". I say this, the day it happened, my Kovy pc went from 100% love and never letting it go to 95% love and 5% mixed emotions. When I committed myself to collecting him, I never forseen this happening. If he was traded to another team, i would have been fine and still collecting him. Though some may say that the result is still the same in regards to him being somewhere else, there are gray areas unique to all. To me as a fan of the devils, i can't help but feel slight disappointment. If i'm wrong to perceive this dissapointment to others then fine, but thats how i feel and i can't do anything about it. I'll never be able to see Kovy play every game like i use to, I'lll never see that patented slap shot or wrist shot on the team and the devils are in a low position (for how long i dont know). These emotions that I am explaining represents that 5% which i speak of. It is this 5% that allows me to be fine with sacrificing my pc of him in order to try and land my ultimate card out there. Since the selling of my PC will most likely never happen, i'm fine and would still love to keep it.

I believe I explained all that i can. There are still other Kovy collectors out there who have decisions to make. If you want to give a short insight into your decision, go right ahead.

I was just wondering that myself. I've got a pretty sweet Kovy RC collection, and I don't really know what to do now. Some of them are even numbered as low as /10. I still like him so I might keep them, but it's certainly a tougher call now! Here is my collection of him:

    Anyone with suggestions?

I just started a Kovy Kollection last year and have over 500 cards some low numbered.

I am going to continue collecting and hope some Kovy guys start dumpring their PC. That should bring down the price of some of the higher $$ cards

I was thinking the same thing at first. While I would love to do that, in my position every dollar for me has to be spent most effectively, which is why it makes sense for me to sell or stop advancing my Kovy pc and focus on my other pc's I have. Everyone has different financial margins, mine doesn't allow me to further my pc of him. I look at it this way, Kovalchuk had an extremely respectable career in the NHL 816 point in 816 games. 416 goals during an 11 year span. Stanley cup appearance. Nothing to snare at. Its the context of his exit that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of fans. At then end of the day he made the choice for his family. Something i can respect. It would be wrong of me to deny anyone their heart and their home. But from a collecting standpoint. I have no room for him.

I'm glad that there are some who will continue collecting him though.

Drew has the right idea which is why I was gonna say that if you decide to sell your Kovy cards, just wait like 2 months b/c there will be less on the market and you'll probably make more back than you would right now.

I disagree. 2 months from now Kovalchuk will be completely forgotten and no one will want his stuff. Supply and demand. Right now his name is everywhere, You're going to be lucky to get half of what you would have gotten on Monday, but trust me, 2 months from now you might actually get zero with no one wanting his stuff. 2 months from now, everyone who wanted his stuff will have purchased it. Ask the Radulov collectors what they went through.

I thought about that but at the same time the market's going be flooded with only a few collectors. These few collectors could be strapped for cash if they have numerous wants popping up all over the place at once. Compared to in 2 months the die hard Kovy collectors will still be there and not as strapped for cash. I could be wrong but that's just how I think it could be.

As a Kovy Kollector, that's exactly what I'm hoping for! I'm not collecting for value or future worth. I'm enjoying the chase and a price drop will open the door for cards that were previously beyond my reach.

Plus, the way Panini and UD are going, they'll be producing new Kovalchuk "Legend" cards for years to come.

All due respect, I can't believe what some of you guys are saying. If Kovalchuk is a PC player for you, you should "love" him enough (you know what I mean) to keep collecting his cards no matter what. I find it distasteful when people stop collecting a certain player because he was traded to a different NHL team (or in this case, leaving the NHL). That's what happens to players and most collectors are aware of this. I don't want this to sound like a rant, but I'm a bit surprised that you don't respect Kovy enough as an athlete to continue collecting his cards.

I hope that you'll feel like you're making the right decision no matter what you decide. Maybe wait a week or two to see things from a different perspective, it might change your mind. It's not like the memories you have of Kovy will fade away, they'll always be there for you to remember them.

    All the best,

    -Ethan

That's the right approach, sir! Hats off to the right collecting mentality; collect for fun and not for business-purposes.
