Guys,
Thank you for being so supportive in the aftermath of my juvenile temper tantrum/meltdown yesterday. In retrospect, it's pretty embarrassing looking at what I posted yesterday, but I think it's also indicative of my having reached a breaking point. Yesterday wasn't even the first time I have expressed my frustrations with running this contest, so I don't think it came out of the blue. Nevertheless, I do think I've reached the point where something needs to change in order for this contest to continue. I battled with the daily grind for as long as I could, but I'm maxed out, and I don't feel any shame in admitting as much. I've been going at it now for almost a year and a half. Heck, I've lasted three times longer than the contest's own creator did. I've pushed myself to stay on top of things and deliver a routinely and dependable experience for you, the participants, for whom this contest is really for. Unfortunately, the amount of anxiety and frustration running the contest largely by myself is causing me on a semi-regular basis cannot be ignored anymore. This contest stopped being any kind of fun for me a long, long time ago. It has only felt like a daily grind/chore for months. As I said, yesterday I reached my breaking/tipping point. It's time for a change, and the thought of having my duties even partially relieved feels like a huge weight off my back. I meant it when I said yesterday that if I never had to tend to this contest ever again, I'd be a happy man. However, declaring "F it!" and riding off into the sunset seems like a pretty selfish and impulsive solution to my stress woes. You guys don't deserve that, and I've put in too much work in this contest to make it what it is now to just flush those efforts down the toilet in a resentful fit. There are better solutions and that is what we need to focus on here.
Before I address some of the changes we could make going forward, I'd first like to thank those of you who have helped pick me up when I needed a break, or when I wasn't able to post. @cjs-sportscards was the first to officially step up and volunteer his time, and deserves a special shout-out. @bakemeister52 has been a godsend at times, sometimes picking up the slack on very short notice. He, too, deserves a specific mention and shout-out.
Everyone who has ever issued me a thanks, or has offered to help, even if I didn't take you up on your offer, is greatly appreciated. I may not have responded every time, but I have read and appreciated every single one of them. I owe a lot to all of you, your patience, your kindness, and your reassurance. If there's one thing I never wanted to do, it was let you guys down. Based on the feedback I've received, I can say confidently that I don't need to worry about that. Also, as much as I maybe feel a bit defeated right now, I know that you guys understand. I've never felt criticized or judged (except by myself). You guys are awesome, and that is why I pushed myself to last as long as I could in this grind, because you guys are awesome and deserve it.
Let's finally get down to the practicality of things going forward, shall we?
A number of suggestions have been made...

@ravens_creed - if you need help from the football team let me know, I know @bakemeister52 does not mind helping with this at all and we are still 88 days away from kickoff in the nfl so if you would like our help I do not mind at all. You have done an amazing job with this and I know the members really enjoy the contest. I actually got into myself and at first I was like meh I don't know if I want to do this but it has grown on me.
By the way I can't believe I'm on a 24 game streak right now blows my mind.Last edited by lil5up3rman; 06-10-2018 at 02:41 PM.

@ravens_creed- Paul- This leads me to another suggestion that would simplify things altogether. Why not eliminate the monthly points and just have points for maximizing the streak? I think the contest was originally intended this way. I, like many, try to maximize my monthly point total, but it is not a necessary part of the contest. The way the rewards are sent up, I believe it provides more motivation to maximize monthly totals than to put together a long streak.

@JFried1029 - I would disagree with that as one of the big reasons I play is for the RP, I don't think I can actually hit a 50 game streak but I love being able to earn all the RP as you can earn quite a bit each month. I probably wouldn't be into the contest without but that's just my opinion.

I'm admittedly racking (wracking?) my brain going through all of the possibilities, and I have a number of other things on my plate to get through today, so let's leave things at this:
- As Scott suggested above, let's take a brief break from the contest to sort things out and then come back stronger and better than ever for the beginning of the World Cup, which starts this Thursday, June 14th with an 11am ETgamematch between Saudi Arabia and hosts Russia. The contest will be back with a schedule for Thursday, June 14th (probably posted sometime Wednesday evening).
- Over the next few days, let's discuss the contest and ways that it could be improved. If you have any suggestions, please share them. If there are things about the contest that you've enjoyed, share those as well. Really, anything goes, whether it's about the scoring, or the schedules, when things are posted, anything!
- Finally, and most importantly, if you would be willing to volunteer or help out going forward, please indicate as much, as well as with what you'd be willing to do. There is no obligation, nor should there be any pressure on anyone to feel that they need to chip in. This is strictly on a voluntary basis, and you have the right to define your own terms, that is, what you would and wouldn't be willing to do.Last edited by ravens_creed; 06-10-2018 at 03:00 PM.

This is something I have discussed (especially with Scott) more than once in the recent past, and I think you're both right. On one hand, this was originally intended to be a streak-based contest, and thought has been given to making the streak element more prominent. Having said that, I don't think Dan (lilsuperman) is alone in being lured to the contest by the Reward Point opportunities that it presents. It's been more than evident for a long time to me that there are more of you who play to try and maximize your RPs than those who play for the streak, whether rightly or wrongly. I think there is a good discussion to be had about what you guys WANT the contest to be. The main purpose here is that it's enjoyable and that you guys are having fun and want to come and play. What kind of a contest would that be? Any different than what it's been? All opinions count here.

A thought just hit my mind, and at times that can be dangerous. How about this contest to be run like this ---
1)Eliminate "levels". Instead, list anywhere from five to ten athletic events that members can pick from.
2)Each member can pick up to three that they think will win. However, they don't have to "pick" every day. Once it starts no one can come in after the first day picks until we come up with a winner. After a winner we start all over again.
3)Their "win streak" will continue until they miss one, then it stops. However, if any are correct, before they missed, they will be added to their "total wins" and "total win points" for that round.
4)When the contestant is eliminated due to the "miss" he/she will get 5 or 10 RP's (or more if you want) for each in their "win streak" up to their "miss".
4a)Lists will be posted with who was "out" due to a "miss" and if they'd get any RP's,and a list of who is still "alive" and how many "wins" that they have. This would be done after each days round (so the # competing would either be the same or less than when the contest started)
5)ONLY those who haven't missed any will be able to continue the round.
6)The round will continue until it's down to just one, and that one would only continue if he/she has to (if some one else had "more of a win streak" than he/she has at the time).
7)The player with the "most wins" will then be awarded the amount of RP's that will be given to the "winner" (100,250,500,or whatever you come up with).
8)When a "winner" has been determined, and awarded, another "contest" of the same type can be done.
9)NOTE: in case of "tie", let the ones who tied either get the same amout of the RP's that would have gone to just one winner OR split the winner RP's among them (whichever you'd rather do)
10)NOTE #2: if you want to give 'extra" RP's to "winners - (1)establish when the "season" will start & "end" and (2)how many will get "extra" RP's - just the one(s)with the most wins OR who had the most wins, second in wins, and third in wins OR...........
11)Once the "game" has been won, then give a day or two break before the next one started. Also, a list of members who have won will be kept/posted on the first post of the "next" contest.
Just a thought. This would definitely eliminate a spreadsheet, and a variety of "values" on different "levels"
With something like this no spreadsheet will be needed. Also, no conflict on how many "points' per level.
Anyway, this is just my thought. A "fun" contest that members can play, and no hard working spreadsheet is needed. As Paul said in the post above "you guys are having fun and want to come and play". Thanks for reading this. Have a good night, RodneyLast edited by OriolesFan; 06-10-2018 at 04:09 PM.

Would things be best if this were to be split into two separate contests? One streak-based contest, perhaps like the one Rodney outlines, and a second daily pick 'ems contest closer to what we've already been doing, but based on a simpler correct/incorrect and Reward Points accumulation basis, with the streak element obviously eliminated.
Both contests would be easier to run individually than the current state this one is in. And, while adding another contest altogether, if I was still doing so with the help of what's probably going to be the new-look SCF Contest Team, and it wasn't a one-man show, it would definitely be more manageable. I know my badge over there says that I'm currently the "SCF Contest Team Manager", but the SCF Contest Team currently only has one member, and really, there's lots of contests I don't even deal with. It's a bit of a misleading title, lol. I think establishing a true Contest Team is something that should have happened a long time ago.
So...
1. Split the contest into two contests, one focused on the streak, one daily pick'ems focused on Reward Points?
2. Would you be willing to join the SCF Contest Team? That will likely only mean helping to manage this/these contest(s)... but this might require you to finish SCF staff training, which requires you to do some menial tasks to get used to the board controls.Last edited by ravens_creed; 06-10-2018 at 05:10 PM.
