The 3 Unofficial GOP Rules That Are Making A Deficit Deal Even Harder

Making an already head-splittingly difficult deal on the fiscal cliff even harder to resolve is a set of three rules by which the Republicans who run the House play.

These are not official regulations; they're more shibboleths that House GOP leaders have adopted in recent years. And those rules are leaving House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, little room to maneuver as lawmakers try to avoid a set of tax increases and spending cuts set to take effect at the end of the year.

All of that may be true, but the bottom line is that there is no point on voting on anything that both sides don't agree on. The president wants Congress to pass an immediate tax hike and then work on spending reductions later. Sorry, that's just not going to happen. The Reps in Congresss did that under Reagan, and the Dems screwed them over and never passed the cuts.

Spot on, and it shouldn't happen.

Boehner and cantor are at the old games again once again. That is what this blog tells me! They have interest in a very small part of the US population. And fact it no one here fits into that well maybe expect for Brandon.

They made one true statement ...Washington needs true leadership....guess what? the GOP is not it!

I don't have a problem with those top rates increasing, but I think there should be ZERO increases until a deal is worked out. Otherwise, there will be no deal, just tax increases. Mitch McConnell said the same thing yesterday.

*UPDATE: Here’s a comment from White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage: ”Right now, the only thing preventing us from reaching a deal that averts the fiscal cliff and avoids a tax hike on 98 percent of Americans is the refusal of Congressional Republicans to ask the very wealthiest individuals to pay higher tax rates. The President has already signed into law over $1 trillion in spending cuts and we remain willing to do tough things to compromise, and it’s time for Republicans in Washington to join the chorus of other voices—from the business community to middle class Americans across the country—who support a balanced approach that asks more from the wealthiest Americans.”
