World Cup Game Ball Brings Big Bid
A soccer ball used in the World Cup final has sold for $74,000 in an online charity auction.
The winning bidder was said to be a fan of the winning team from Spain.
Proceeds from the sale on eBay were destined for 46664, Nelson Mandela’s campaign to ease child poverty and Aids in Africa and elsewhere.
Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 to win the country’s first World Cup on July 11.
The ball used during the Cup matches drew some criticism for its design. Some even likened it to a ball found in supermarkets but that talk was scoffed at by Adidas, the manufacturer. The company said the technology used allowed “exceptionally stable flight and perfect grip under all conditions”. The ball was made from eight spherically molded panels and has a textured surface intended to improve aerodynamics.
The gold version of the ball used in the final was named ‘Jo’bulani’ because the game was played in Johannesburg, South Africa, known colloquially as Jo’burg.
133 bids were entered in the auction from 55 international bidders.
