    Topps UFC 2010 preview

    By Kerry Webster aka windmortal

Topps will release its fourth offering of a mixed martial arts stand-alone card set the second week of September with Topps UFC 2010.
According to Topps, each box will contain four hits, including two autographed cards and two relic cards. Each 16-pack box will also contain 16 parallel and 16 insert cards.
The set will be built around a 200-card base set, which includes 65 subset cards. There will be 30 Debut cards that will include the first Topps base cards of Kimbo Slice, Roy Nelson and Phil Davis. The 15-card Personalities subset will include Dana White, Joe Rogan and collector favorite Arianny Celeste. Topps packaged its fight tribute series — similar to the Top Ten Fights and Photo Finish inserts sets of previous releases — into the base set with a 20-card Highlight Reel subset featuring action photography of fights between GSP and BJ Penn, Rich Franklin and W. Silva and Forrest Griffin vs. Tito Ortiz, and more.
All 200 base cards will have four parallel versions, including the thick gold cards, onyx cards numbered to 188, ruby cards numbered to 8 and diamond cards numbered to 1.
In each pack, collectors will find a card from one of five insert sets. This issue’s lineup for inserts borrowed a page from the Topps UFC 2009 book as several sets make an encore appearance.

Topps brings back its Greats of the Game set to feature 15 fighters and video graphics from the video game “UFC 2010: Undisputed.” Notable inclusions are Jones, Penn, Lesnar, GSP and Anderson Silva.
The 10-card Octagon of Honor once again recognizes the accomplishments of past champions and Hall of Fame fighters in this set. Featured are Chuck Liddell, Jens Pulver, Don Fry and others.
The popular Fight Poster Review series also continues. The third series of 25-card poster inserts include UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson, UFC 63: Hughes vs. Penn and UFC 82: Pride of a Champion. Topps previously announced this would be a four-part, 100-card series of insert cards. This issue will mark the release of cards 51-75.
The other insert set returning is Bloodlines, which spotlights the national heritage of 15 fighters. The card back features the English language, as well as the fighter’s native language. Personalities appearing in the set include W. Silva, BJ Penn, Mirko Cro Cop and Lyoto Machida.
In addition to the base version of the inset card, Topps has produced a handful of parallels to accompany the Bloodlines in the set. Collectors will seek the onyx parallels numbered to 88, ruby parallels numbered to 8 and diamond parallels numbered to 1. Yoshihiro Akiyama, BJ Penn, Vladimir Matyushenko, Wanderlei Silva and Lyoto Machida also have autographed versions.
The new insert set appearing in Topps UFC 2010 is the 15-card Pride and Glory subset, which features highlight cards from popular Pride fights. Subjects include Cro Cop, W. Silva, Shogun Rua, Vitor Belfort, Anderson Silva and more.
“Chase” cards in the set include relics, autographs and a combination of both.

There are 40 fighters featured with pieces of an actual mat from a highlighted fight, and 20 UFC professionals appear on card with fight-used relic pieces, such as gloves, shorts or shirts. In addition to the base version of these cards, there are several parallels including golds numbered to 188, onyx numbered to 88, rubies numbered to 8 and diamond, which are 1-of-1.
A new relic card will appear in the form of Tale of the Tape cards, which features fight-used fist tape from 15 UFC fighters, including Randy Couture, Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Cro Cop. The Tale of the Tape cards are numbered to just 25.
More than 20 first-time signers will appear in the Fighters and Personalities autograph set, including Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Matt Hughes, Nate Diaz and Cain Velasquez. Several of these fighters will be honored on special “First Autograph Issue” stamped cards. Autograph parallels include onyx numbered to 88, ruby numbered to 8 and diamond, which are 1-of-1.
There will also be at least 30 autographed cards with the fighter’s name or nickname in red ink. These hobby exclusive cards will be numbered to just 15.
Like in the Topps UFC 2009 product, the Ultimate Foto sub-set contains autographed cards of the 14 contestants and two coaches from The Ultimate Fighter, Season 11. According to Topps, these hobby exclusive cards will have the fighter’s signature appear directly on the card.

Another hobby exclusive for the Topps UFC 2010 series is Ultimate Gear relics, which includes 20 contenders with an autograph and fight-used glove, shirt or relic. These cards will be numbered to just 25 and includes fighters such as BJ Penn, Lyoto Machida, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Brock Lesnar, Arianny Celeste, Dan “Punkass” Caldwell and Tim “Skyscrape” Katz.
Six dual autographed mat relic cards will also be included in the series, and again, will be hobby exclusive. The cards will contain two fighters’ autographs and a piece of mat from an actual professional bout between the two featured combatants. The cards will each be numbered to 25 and includes Forrest Griffin/Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn/Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian/Clay Guida, Rashad Evans/Thiago Silva, Nate Marquardt/Chael Sonnen and Josh Koscheck/Anthony Johnson.
There will be two new card styles for the UFC 2010 product.

The Thoughts from the Boss cards pairs UFC President Dana White with one of 15 UFC fighters and offers a few words about the specific fighter by the boss himself. The cards will include White’s signature, along with the featured fighter’s autograph. Fighters appearing in the sub-set include Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Jon Jones and Randy Couture.
Perhaps the most sought-after pieces from the product will be hobby exclusive. The 2009 UFC Champs Book Cards will highlight the 2009 UFC champions with an autograph and two jumbo relics within stunning book cards. These extremely rare cards will be numbered to just 3.
The product is expected to be released at the end of August and be on hobby store shelves by September 15.
