Salary Cap Fun (?) - You Be The GM
Here's a fun challenge for everybody - manage your roster so that you can field a full team--at least 12F, 6D, and 2G to a maximum of 23 players--and still fit under the salary cap. Taking a look at capgeek.com, there are presently 14 teams at $55M or more committed to the cap this season, who still have roster spots to fill. Indeed, there are a handful of teams that are already over the cap - you know who you are. LOL
So yes, have some fun creating your roster. Feel free to use guys that are in the system to fill spots, and if you see a guy who is still an RFA or UFA you can add him to your list too, but be realistic: don't expect Carey Price to sign your offer sheet of $750,000 a year for 15 years. :)
Here's what I've done with the Canadiens:

I thought about adding Palushaj to the roster so that the team was at 23 players and could rotate the 4th line, but that pushed it to like $59.3M and left absolutely no flexibility at all. Best to have a little breathing room in case of injury or another signing down the road. I'm somewhat tempted to look at a D-man on the market because Markov will be out a couple months but I'd have to look at it further.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

This is the Kings right now if the season started today, minus Stoll. Stoll will be gone if Schenn makes the team and he will be traded for a defenseman most likely. If that is the case, take out Voinov and plug in whoever is there. Harrold is a 13/14th forward and 7/8th dman.

LTIR: Marco Sturm $3,500,000
Total Cap Hit before LTIR: $55,270,000
Total Cap Hit After LTIR (If he returns) $58,770,000
This does not include any Bonus that is provided to Tyler Seguin or Zach Hamil. These numbers are based on Marc Savard and Tim Thomas being Traded which is Highly Likely. Savard is perhaps going to Toronto for Kaberle, its only a matter of time. 6 teams are very interested in Thomas, and Boston will get rid of him for a bag of pucks. So here is my team, 22 players total. I left a Roster spot open for a 4th liner either from Junior or a small trade, (possibly return on Savard or Thomas deal).
I really like this team as well. I thought about putting Brad Marchand on this list, but again, I think it takes us too close to the cap and we need room for Sturms Contract upon return.
The only thing I questioned was Michael Ryder. I have it as keeping him, but I'm not quite sure. I know Peter C wants him gone, but not sure if they will buy him out or trade him (if anyone would take him)

Lines
1: Roy/Connolly/Vanek
2: Pommer/Hecht/Stafford
3: Grier/Neidermayer/Kennedy
4: Kaleta/Gaustad/McCormick
Ex: Ennis, Gerbe (they also can go to Portland w/o passing through Waivers) and MA Gragnani (see Defense)
I'd LOVE to see Stafford or Roy or Connolly moved!!!
DEFENSE
Rivet, Craig » 3.5
Leopold, Jordan » 3
Montador, Steve » 1.55
Myers, Tyler » 1.3
Sekera, Andrej » 1.0

Gragnani, Marc-Andre » 900k (when signed)
Weber, Mike » 550k

2: Rivet/Butler
3: Montador/ (Sekera/Weber)
I'm adding Mike Weber to the roster for this season and will platoon as the 7th d-man. I have also signed MA Gragnani to a 900k contract. He can play both D and Wing and could be on the roster if they need a 23rd body
GOAL
Miller, Ryan » NTC (can list eight teams he will not accept a trade to) 6.25
Lalime, Patrick » 650k
Lalime Cap hit is 35% smaller this season!!
there are no LTIR or buy-out issues currently
Cap (With all the players mentioned): 55.1 Million (about 4.3 million in room to add)
Addressing rumors found on the Internet
*With 4 Million of wiggle room, the Sabres are one of the few teams that can absorb a contract and still be alright. Kaberle would be a good fit because at 4.25 Million, the Sabres would be able to move Sekera or Butler and a forward (Stafford) and the numbers would still work.
*Now, if the Sabres were to consider Brian Campbell back from the Hawks... this would take some work. Derek Roy would probably have to be going back to Chicago in the return, which would keep the Sabres below the Cap
If I was the GM
There are 2 glaring needs for this team heading into this season.
#1 Center
PP Quarterback
I believe I can address 1, which is the PP Quarterback. If I was GM, I would be on the phone with Stan Bowman to see if I could get Soupy back. Yes, it's a 7+ Million cap hit, but the Hawks need the room and we need a PP QB I would offer them Stafford (1.9) and Sekera (1 M) for Campbell (7.142M), this would put the Sabres at the Cap. It gives the Sabres back the PP QB, signed for 5 seasons and give Chicago room to sign Niemi!
With this move
FORWARDS
Vanek, Thomas » 7.142857
Pominville, Jason » NMC/Modified NTC (can provide an eight-team no-trade list) 5.3
Connolly, Tim » 4.5

2: Pommer/Kennedy/Ennis
3: Grier/Neidermayer/Hecht

Now, the possibility of Tim Conboy being on the roster becomes a possibility as the extra forward as this would save 300k on the cap!

+ 0.417 for Buyout of Robert Nillson
Grand Total: 55.629 Million. Still under the cap :)
There's obviously a few things that I'm assuming here. I've got Gagner, Cogliano, and Paajarvi all penciled in at what I think are recent contracts. To be honest: Neither Gags or Cogs has shown enough over the last three years to warrent very much more money that I've suggested I might even be overpaying Ganger). I would expect small money, short term (1 or 2 years).
Paaharvi, I've got earning the rookie max (875k) and a 1 million bonus. Seems reasonable. He was a 10th overall pick, that kind of money makes sense to me.
I'm also betting on the fact that Souray goes nowhere. Nobody is going to trade for an often injured, ageing defenseman who makes 5.4 million per season. Him & the Oilers are stuck with each other, at least for now. He's backtracked on his trade demands over the summer - knowing full well he needs to save face, incase he's stuck there. He might get traded eventually, but I don't expect it to be before the season starts.
Also - Yes. I'm expecting a 3 headed monster in net. The problem is that Edmonton can't send either JDD or DD to the minors, without clearing waivers. I think they're stuck with all three of them on the roster.
Yes - I've got 3 rookie up front. I would anticipate the lines to look something like this:
Hall / Horcoff / Hemsky
Penner / Gagner / Eberle
Paajarvi / Brule / Cogliano
Stortini / Fraser / Jones
Whitney / Gilber
Souray / Smid
Foster / Vandermeer

Scoot, youre gonna have to explain this one to me lol. I like Soupy but I dont see making him our highest paid player as a #5 d-man. If it was for a year or 2 then maybe but to have that much cap space tied up in Cambell for 5 more years seems crazy to me. I do like your forward lines after the trade but Id prefer to see a guy like Kaberle (better player with a much friendlier cap hit) than Campbell. Im also not sold on Mccormick making the roster, and although I may be biased, I dont see the Sabres not finding a place to plug Tyler Ennis in next year.
