Open Discussion for 8/10: The Term "Case Hit"
I thought this would be a great idea. Every day or two I am going to bring up something in our hobby for discussion and debate.
For my first discussion, let's talk about the phrase "case hit". This is a saying that I see thrown around a lot in the pack/box break section. More times then not I am left scratching my head when someone posts a scan of a card that is the "case hit", that if we sold, wouldn't even cover the cost of the box....never mind put a dent in the total expense of a case. GRANTED, I know most of us don't bust packs and boxes primarily focused on the resale value of any cards pulled. But if leaves me wondering, what determines the case hit? Rarest card, most valuable, etc... I am sure to one person a case hit may be a card of their favorite player or team, and to another person it may be the card this is worth the most money. These are just all thoughts/opinions, and should be taken as such...there is no right or wrong answer. DISCUSS

I would say a case hit is something that odds at coming at 1 per case or even more rare. A auto from Ultra, MVP, Series 1/2.
A Patch from SPA isn't a case hit, they come 3-5 per case.

I kind of disagree here. The Patch from SPA of 3-5 per case cannot be classified as a box hit because it's not guaranteed to be in every box. However, at least 3 are guaranteed in a case. Therefore, it should be considered a case hit.

Perfect response.
Looks at Upper Deck Series 1 (easy product to break down, widely collected):
'Box Hits' would be your 6 young guns, 2 jersey cards, and 1 UD Exclusive.
'Case Hits' would be the patch cards, signature sensations, big playmakers, and I think the Painting / Header card from the Hockey Heroes inserts.... along with other inserts like Clearly Canadian, AWT SPs, and Clearcut Trios.
There's also the lower end inserts, but I wouldn't really consider them to even be box hits. They're far too common for a tag like that.
Like Qwikflipz said - Case Hit is anything that comes 1-per-case or less. I suppose cards that are guaranteed by the case, instead of by the box, could also fit the definition though.

To add to my original points, and not to be a Debby-Downer....but sometimes I notice that someone will post their scans, and save the case hit for the last scan and post it like this:
and......
.......
*SCAN* CASE HIT!!!
And they are so excited, and I am sitting here thinking, congrats, that card is going to cover 1/3 of the cost of that box.

I completely agree. It is something you hit once per case hence "case hit" its not plural. There is only one per case.

When I think of case hit I think of something that fall 1:Case. Anything else is just a nice hit.

This.
Even if it's a scrub player, something that fall 1:Case is a case hit. Whether it's worth $5 or $500.

there are 3 terms that should be used
we all know Case Hit and Box Hit, but one that should be used more is Multi-box hit. It's not a case hit, but not a box hit either.
Perfect example is when I was building out the 2007-08 OPC master set back in the day.
Box hits were the Micromotion Black #/100 Parallels (1 or 2 per box)
Case hit was an OPC Signature; those fell 1:432 packs (1 per case)
Quad Materials were 3 per case (1:144 packs); not a case hit, but a Multiple box hit!
edit: This is an article I wrote about 2 years ago about building this out, discusses some of the topics of case hits/box hits (https://www.sportscardforum.com/artic...-a-master-set/)

To follow up my origional post (with the comments here about scrub players) I'll break down what I got in my first box of UD Series 1 this year:
Brodeur Header
Broderu Painting
Mike Lundin Signature Sensations
Donald Brashear Game Patch
1 Game Jersey (don't remember who)
6 Young Guns (doesn't matter who)
Based on the odds of pulling that stuff, my box was pretty remarkable. I killed the odds, and came away with 4 'case hits'. The Brodeur cards were great - wanted them for the PC - but the Lundin & Brashear cards, well.... whatever. I sold the Brashear on eBay for $13, or so, and still have the Lundin (and would be lucky to get $5 dlvd for it).
The actual value, to me, is meaningless here. In any case of UD Series 1, there was likely only 1 Game Patch, 1 Signature Sensation, 1 Brodeur Painting, and 1 Brodeur Header. That makes them case hits.
