Hocke Card Nomenclature
Hello everyone, is there a thread somewhere that explains all of the hockey card speak that people throw around. Having been out of card collecting for 15 years there's alot of new stuff out there and alot of ways to refer to things, such as cards that have pieces of jersey's in them and so on. I tried a search but didn't turn up much.
Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to SCF! I think you'll find that this is a great place to get the kind of info you're looking for, and this section (Hockey Card Talk) is the best one for posting quesitons like this. I'll try and list a lot of the acronyms and terms I see used a lot - but by no means should you consider this to be a complete list (hopefully some other members keep adding to it).
GU - Refering to the fact that there's a piece of Game Used Material on the card.
Swatch - Refering to the pieice of GU material.
Jeresy - The GU Material above is specifically a piece of a player's jersey.
Patch - Instead of the lighter jersey material, patch refers to a piece that's been taken from the Emblem, Name Plate, Numbers, or other crests on the Jeresy.
AU - Autographed Card
RC - A player's Rookie CArd
Parallel - Most sets contain 'parallel' versions of other cards. They often have the same photography, and the same numbering - but with different color borders, serial numbering, something.
As far as trading forums, like SCF, you'll see a lot of acroynms:
WTTF - Want to trade for
WTB - Want to Buy
CMB - Check My Bucket
Bucket - Named for 'photobucket.com', it's a place where traders keep scans of their cards
That's all I can think of off the top of my head..... but please, keep adding to the list everyone :)

Mojo - excessive good luck when breaking wax
Whale - stemming from Moby Dick, the card(s) you've been hunting but have a hard time obtaining

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've seen XRC and I've been wondering exactly what that was.
I'm assuming it's got to do with cards produced before the player's rookie season.
Any info?

Yes.
XRC does refer to a card that was issued before an actual Rookie Card season.
Best example right now would be the BAP redemptions. You pulled a redemption card in 08-09 for one of the 09-10 Rookies. You get, for example, a Tavares. Since Tavares' rookie cards are from 09-10.... and not 08-09, it's an XRC - even though it was issued in the 09-10 season, it came from 08-09 packs.
In the 90s, the places you used to see them were from sets whose cards didn't count as RCs. 1991-92 Upper Deck Czeck World Juniors..... it was a 100 card set, orgionally only available in the Czeck Republic. It was twice as big as the WJC subset in UD Series 2 that year (but used the same style of cards, and some photos for the players that were in both). Paul Karyia & Roman Hamrlik both had cards in that set, but their actual RCs didn't come along until the 92-93 season.
I think Bill Guerin & Ray Whitney were inclued in a 91-92 Parkhurst Update set that was issued as a mailin redemption, and their RCs didn't come along until 92-93.
(Those are just a few examples).
You could also argue that a lot of the ITG H&P stuff could have an XRC tag on it.

Ok, now I'm a little confused on the game used. Are all cards with jersey swatches game used? Also, I've seen a couple of cards that are SP game used but they don't appear to have anything with the card, jersey swatches or otherwise.

'SP Game Used' is a product that Upper Deck releases. That's the name of the set (Just like SP Authentic, SPx, Ice, Victory, The Cup, etc).
There are lots of cards in that product, that have no jersey swatches.
As for all cards with jersey swatches being 'game used', the answer is simply 'no'. A lot of them are "event worn" and we're starting to see more and more "manufactured" patches.
It can be very hard to tell the difference when you're looking at someone's bucket, or taking a look at something on eBay. Typically the 'guarentee' on the back of the card will tell you what exactly it is - and that part isn't typically scanned. Usually a specific set is all the same - Likely all the cards are either game worn, or all the cards are not. If you don't know, the information is usually pretty easy to find out. Start a thread here - members are pretty quick to give out info like that.
