Agreed. I think I'm just not being clear. This is supposed to look like an NHL jersey number. But no NHL jersey number I've ever seen only has one layer of patch on a multicolored number.
This patch literally is one piece of fabric dyed both yellow and white. It then has grey stitching screen printed on to replicate the look of real stitching. From icejerseys.com. This is how an authentic numbering would look:

This is how a replica, and the numbering on my card, looks:

From a profile view, this is what my card looks like. Pardon my "art":

Am I crazy?

I am not sure if it will help, but I have a Pavelec Thrashers Certified card to compare it to. You can see it here

Really? That wouldn't surprise me from Upper Deck. About what year was this and do you remembers who's BTL's? I thought that in the last few years teams have worn Set 1 from the start of Preseason to around New Years, but I imagine it would vary by team.

I wouldnt worry about it. Like the previous poster said, patches can come off any part of the jersey.
Its not like you or anyone else would complain if it were a reebok logo or laundry tag, right?

I think I know what part of the jersey it is from. It is from the main logo. One of th borders of the logo.

On a diffrent trading card forum there is a UD dumont card with a similar question. Must be something the preds started doing on their jerseys.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that -- looks like that answers my question. It still sucks but apparently not just panini-only.
Appreciate everyone's help!

No it is likely the Preds new jersey style. Both companies are using authentic game worn or event worn jersey's and not replica's.
