Basu: Kostitsyn "Freed From His Shackles"
http://montreal.ctv.ca/servlet/an/lo...MontrealSports
Andrei Kostitsyn was thrown onto a line with Scott Gomez Feb. 1 in Washington, and spent the next 10 games playing with him.
Prior to that switch, Kostitsyn had three goals and two assists in six games. After getting an assist in Washington, Kostitsyn went nine games without a point.
Now, three games into a stint with Lars Eller as his centre, Kostitsyn has four points including the winning goal and a great assist Saturday night in a big 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
It's pretty staggering to see what the Gomez effect has become, as winger after winger have been placed by his side only to fall into a black hole of production.
Consider this: over that 10-game stretch where Kostitsyn was playing with Gomez he was a minus player five times, going minus-8 overall. In his other 52 games this season, some of which were played with Gomez, Kostitsyn has been a minus player only 11 times (including Saturday night, by the way), going plus-12 overall.
It doesn't get much more striking than that.
Habs fans everywhere have been lamenting just how awful Gomez has been this year. Passes to nobody, empty stat lines, a +/- that rivals Kovalchuk's, on and on.
Kostitsyn himself had a great start to the year, then swooned and disappeared for a long time, but has been good in recent games. I wonder if the surge has increased trade value (if he is on the block) but I still have doubts as to whether or not he fits into the Habs' long-term plans after this season.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

That's what I see in him as well.
I'd be a big fan of padding his stats with Pleks and Cammi, and then trading his butt.
I'd like to have TJ oshie. It won't happen, but it's always nice to wonder.

What team would actually take his salary? Three more years with a cap hit over 7? The return from that would be almost nothing. It would have to be a dead weight for dead weight swap where they would get a bad contract in return.

I was actually just talking about that with friends a few minutes ago - basically they'd be hoping that the overpriced contract coming back would be that of a player who would benefit from a change of scenery.

I was referring to Andre Kostitsyn. Actually I thought the entire thread was about AK?
Now Gomez. If he doesn't put up in the playoffs, then the fans will turn on him like they did on Price a few seasons ago. They've (fans) have been pretty quiet about him. Most likely because Cammalleri makes a little less and doing nothing too (well until the last few games, guess he needed a break).

I'd take him if you'd take DiPietro.

I'm a goalie fan, but we already have a Star Goalie.
I bet Dipietro's career would have been a little better on a different team. I still don't have his YG.

since when was Dipietro a star goalie?
besides, does the cap hit count if you put him on the long term IR?
PS - thanks again for taking Gomaz.

You're welcome. However he was a very important piece tot he playoff run last season. He killed a ton of penalties, was the only Hab to be able to break out of our own end (Markov was gone, quel surprise).
I know he's having a poor seaosn, but I still like the guy. Great personality, and they all get alone well in the dressing room.
I guess that's why the Habs fans haven't booed him yet.
