A couple noob questions
Hey guys, great forum you have here and I'm glad to be a member now. Just a few quick questions:
1. What online stores have the best prices? I live in Ottawa and there's a few good stores around but I feel as if I could get better deals online. Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm just getting back into the hobby after like 10 years.
2. I recently opened an older box ('03-'04 MVP) and I got a 'Rookie Redemption' card which has obviously expired. Is there any value to this card by itself? Is there anything I can do with it to somehow get a card or two out of it? The original offer is to send it in and receive TEN rookie cards.
3. Can cards be more valuable if you get the player himself to sign it? I know a young NHLer who I've obtained his rookie cards and will be getting him to sign it in the offseason. With all the auto'd cards these days, I want to know what the deal is.
4. How do you become a VIP member on this site so that you can get first access to the sales/breaks/etc. Also, what is CC money?
5. Any suggestions on boxes to open? (Old or new)... I like everyone else have found a lot of value in the SPx series but am wondering what other boxes have lots of value?
Thanks a lot and happy trading!

Hello and welcome to SCF!
I'll do what I can to help out with your Q's...
1. You'll want to buy Canadian so that you can avoid the customs & fees and stuff from some of the bigger American online retailers. Quecan is one Canadian vendor that is often named as they've got really good prices & selection.
2. With a long-expired redemption like that it's got little more value than a decoy, unfortunately.
3. Usually cards are signed IP have only a greater value for their owner. With the large number of forgers out there, many people will only stick to certified autographs instead of buying IP autos.
4. SCF VIP Information can be accessed here: https://www.sportscardforum.com/view.php?pg=premium
Card Cash is explained here: https://www.sportscardforum.com/showthread.php?t=500165
5. Older boxes are always a bit of a gamble due to the redemptions. Anything from 05-06 gets special mention because of Crosby/Ovechkin RCs. What I like to do as a Canadiens collector is look for the sets that have the greatest number of Canadiens hits so as to increase my chances of pulling a PC card. If you're looking for stuff from 10-11 my favourites to this point have been Certified, UD1, and Crown Royale.
Hope that helps somewhat - enjoy the site!
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Thanks for the response... Another question, is BV the first number in a beckett? Do trades/sales usually only happen at that first 'Base Value' number? If that's the case, what's the second price for?

So what's BV? The middle of the two?

I believe it depends on the situation, if they player is a hot commodity, the Hi Price is the most you should expect, and the Lo is at the players worst.

I too live in Ottawa and I just wanted to mention that there are monthly card shows, where you can usually get good deals. There was actually one today. Here is the link to the show schedule: http://capitaltradeshows.com/

Thanks mingus! Too bad I missed it! Can you get good deals on boxes as well? Or just singles? I'm not really into buying cards (except for Girouxs)... I moreso enjoy the thrill of cracking open a pack and getting some cool stuff!

Boxes will generally be expensive at a show... some dealers have specials.
Singles you can definately haggle on prices.
