Yes I know people died and many are homeless but facts are that you can rebuild on land ravaged by a tsunami or earthquake, but if those reactors blow it would devastate Japan for many decades just look at Chernobyl.

They say now the death toll will probably be up to 100.000 when they're done counting. But regardless, even if people are selfcentered and don't give a crap about Japan or any worldnews for that matter, you should care. 1) If the worst happens woth the plants people on the Eastcoast of North America should worry 2) And this is the most immeiate concern - world economy. Japan is one of the big pillars in the world economy, maybe as big as USA (cause USA ain't what they used to be). Already now you can be sure on this will affect the global finances, we're just out of a recesseion and will be easily pulled in again. If the worst happens with the plants or if a new big quake hits Tokyo after this, and Japans economy really goes to h*ll, you can count on a massive worldwide recession. So even if you never pick up a newspaper and walk around in your "safe" little bubble it will still hit you. That's why I don't respect people who say news or politics or other parts of the world don't concern them. It always does even if you close your eyes and keep saying it doesn't.

You're right. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami was/is terrible beyond belief, but yeah, if the reactors go, this becomes a massive issue that spans generations. I have faith in the resiliency of the Japanese people, and wish them nothing but the best.

Now I understand why Japs authorities are hushing it down (they definitely are!) about the plants, just learnt Japanese industries pretty much own and rules ALL nuclear plants and handling worldwide! Apparently they own and handle all Swedish nuclear fuel depots. Nice. I guess there are commemrcial issues of downsizing the plant problems now.

While I am not putting down the idea that this is a serious problem. The one thing you have to keep in mind is that the damage is away from the capitol. This did hit a big city but it was not Tokyo.
If these reactors do go, you will see a massive problem with health for generations to come. The economy in Japan is going to shift in ways we can not imagine. People from those areas are going to be forced to move into an all ready crowded south side of Japan.

Another thing that is sad that we as Americans need to pay attention to, is the way the Japanese people are handling this situation. When Katrina hit you had tons of cases of looting, and not looting to get food and water, but big screen tvs and such. They saw it more of an opportunity to steal than a disaster. Instead of helping one another they robbed one another. I heard on the radio that they have reported only 10 cases of looting in Japan. I'm sure there are probably more cases than 10, but nothing like what happened after Katrina. Also, it seemed like instead of trying to fix what happened it was just a bunch whining, complaining and pointing the finger.
Have I missed anything, or am I wrong about anything here? I just would like Americans to handle disasters with humanity and intelligence, not like a bunch of uncivilized idiots.

Ehum : ) I know I'll anger a lot of people now, but if I just say what many European think: Americans are considering uncivilized idiots, and Japanese in the straight opposite directions. Ok that's a joke, but to be honest, US really do have tons of aggressivity, violence etc. BUT, I do think some amount of crime and looting would occur in other countries too in Europe, I just think Japan and some other Asian countries got another culture.
Like I heard today along the way of all this, pregnant women in beginning of pregnancy in Japan has a little pink note on them that they're pregnant so everyone knows, and everyone will shows them more respect and care. Like I told my friend: "If a pregnant woman in Sweden walks in the wrong town and show that note, someone will take a joy in kicking the sh*t out of her just because of that".

That's awesome. Every country should do that.

Yeah they should, but like I said, don't think we are as nice about it, not in some areas.
Otoh (in case anyone feel judged), civilised are terrific but that doesn't automatically say who the real "good guys" are. Japan has since forever been the "Germans" of Asia, very aggressive and hated among other Asian countries, and I bet Germany also would be very civilised in similar situation btw.
