so he wants the NCAA to continue to profit huge on the big college sports and have the college athlete receive absolutely zero compensation?

I don't totally disagree with his position. Athletes are essentially being paid a college degree to play sports. Many of them lack the intellect to actually acquire a college degree and wouldn't be accepted into anything but a community college otherwise, so it isn't like they are actually earning their degree by putting in the same studying efforts that non-athlete students are. They get a degree in exchange for their athletic playing ability. Think I am wrong? Show me a college athlete that plays poorly and still has a scholarship.

I also think this statement is a joke:
"They are students, just like any other student on campus who receives a merit-based scholarship,"

They are not. Anybody who has been to college knows that the athletes are not just like any other student. They get special considerations, freebies from the athletic boosters, free passes on bad grades, jobs that require minimal effort to earn a paycheck, etc. They are nothing like the average student.

Also, if they are not professional athletes then what are they? Do they earn a paycheck? No, but only because the NCAA prevents it. What they do earn is a college scholarship that is worth $10k-$25 a semester plus a dorm room and meals. Sounds like a decent "salary" to me for a 19 year old fresh out of high school.

I'm not sure how many you think by saying "Many of them lack the intellect to actually acquire a college degree and wouldn't be accepted into anything but a community college", but I don't think it's fair to say that they don't put in the same effort as none athletic students. Sure there are the one and done basketball player types that get entrance to a school because of their athletic talent and probably wouldn't otherwise, but I don't think it's fair to classify all college athletes into this group. There are so many college athletes that get scholarships and use the opportunity to get a college degree as they don't have pro talent or don't play a sport that pays like the main sports do.
