Question About Buying Hockey Cards

I'm pretty new of collecting hockey cards and just wanted to know if it's worth buying the cheap boxes of hockey cards where i can buy them at Zellers Or Walmart? I can buy a box of 16 random packs for $ 28.99+tax there. In the box you get 2 Memorablia cards and 16 packs of hockey cards that could be newer packs or older packs. Normally in a box i would get a few packs of 05-06 Parkhurst,08-09 Upperdeck MVP,08-09 Masterpieces,05-06 Hot Prospects,05-06 ITG Heroes Prospects,Upperdeck 09-10 and more. I'm guessing for the $ 28.99 it's worth the buy? I have bought a few boxes that are always wrapped up so you can't see in the box of what packs you will get but you can see 2 packs of what you will get 1 pack is shown on the front of the box and one pack is shown on the backside of the box. So far the boxes i have opened the 2 Memorablia cards have both been Sergei Samsonov piece of jersey cards 06-07 upperdeck series 1 and a 05-06 upperdeck series 2.

Also i have bought boxes of 12 packs of 09-10 upperdeck series 2 for $ 11.99+tax a box. And a box of 10 packs of 07-08 Fleer Ultra for $ 11.99+ tax.

Is it worth buying the boxes like i said or is it just a waste of my money. I do plan on selling alot of the cards i get but i've seen alot of cards on ebay that look alot nicer then mine so i don't know if i would be able to sell mine. I do think i have alot of great cards thoe that i have got so far from buying the cheap boxes at Zellers and walmart.

The random pack boxes I haven't ever opened but every now and again I'll see somebody with a really good break.

The blaster boxes, such as the 09-10 UD2, are often pretty good buys. You're guaranteed at least two YGs and there's still the chance of a GU as well. I've pulled two Taylor Hall YGs this year, and both came from blaster boxes.

Every now and again the retail stuff can really come through. You don't get a crack at the autos or Exclusives/HG parallels but there are still some good rookie hits out there.

Blasters are good, But dont touch the loose retail packs and rack packs. People like myself search them. so Unless there from a brand new box, its highly recommended that you stay away.

One of the packs i opened there were 2 Auto-Facts cards that were autographed from Guillaume Latendresse and also Gerry Cheevers in the same pack..I could not believe there were 2 in the same pack. Also i have gotten 3 numbered cards that are numbered to 10. Ilya Kovalchuk Artifacts Star Card 03/10. A Vincent Lecavalier numbered card 09/10 and Bobby Clarke Artifacts Legend card numbered 03/10 all from Upperdeck Artifacts 09-10. I have gotten 2 autographs cards from buying boxes there so i know you can get the autos from buying boxes at Zellers. Its all about luck i guess

I'm just not sure how much the low numbered cards are worth since they don't show a price in the Beckett book.

If you can find a collector of those players, I'm quite sure you could easily sell them since they are low numbered and hard to find cards.

As for opening boxes, like you said, it's all about luck, sometimes you can pull a card worth 3 times the price you paid for the box. On the other hand, sometimes, you get cards worth half or less of what you paid for the box. Boxes in Walmarts/Zellers are considered "retail" because you have less chance of pulling great cards, but boxes are cheaper. Still, great pulls come out of retail.

rookie gold is 1/244
