this is a pretty easy thing to correct so not sure why Panini half assed this.
Just print a batch of Stepan base and send it to collectors who want one for their sets. free card, happy collector, blah blah

Base-Card Conundrum: Derek Stepan’s 2011 Certified Hockey Totally Silver Parallel Is
High-volume case breakers of the new 2011-12 Certified Hockey product no doubt already know: There is but one version of the Derek Stepan base card in the set -- and it's the Totally Silver parallel version that was supposed to be found only in hot boxes. Chalk it up to a production error.

Wow, I find it hard to believe how upset this makes people. Think of how many cards each of these companies puts out every year...REALLY think about it. NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, Nascar.....Justin Bieber! Millions upon millions of cards....you should be asking "how do they not make MORE mistakes?"
These products have to be out on time, which is why there are redemptions. If they werent out on time, people would go crazy. Chalk the mistakes up to consumer demand. The people making these cards are under enormous pressure to meet their deadlines.
How about appreciating the products you have bought in the past, and will keep on buying in the future, rather than picking out the few blips that pop up?
My two cents.

Honestly this mistake isn't that bad. It happens. I've found tonnes of errors with mistaken player info, wrong jersey swatches (it happens but I think they get it right 98% of the time), missing or wrong or upside down autos, etc. The worst is getting damaged cards. This isn't a big deal. A little annoying for set collectors but last year the Brock Trottier rooke auto 212 was SP'd and missing the auto so that is more frustrating.

People get mad because the price
For 100$ a box the product should be near perfect
If your product is 15$ a box sure have a bunch of errors, 100$ for a box, most people expect a pretty well put together mistake free product
You buy a 100$ blow dryer that sucks air in instead of blowing air out, most would be mad, if it was 15$ you'd say well, I knew I shouldn't of been cheap.

Is the absence of a Derek Stepan base card truly equivalent to a blow dryer functioning the opposite of what it's supposed to do? Let's be serious here. We're talking about a base card that probably 90% of people would throw in a box and never look at again before donating the box to the children's hospital/leave on the table at the LCS/toss in the garbage.
If we were talking about Panini putting all of the Sidney Crosby auto stickers on Steve Mason's cards, yeah, there'd be some room for some serious anger. But we're talking about a 10c card being left out of the product.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

My thoughts exactly. This is a BASE card and the error is across the board. No reason to be upset with Panini.
I think, for the sake of oddity, I would probably want that Crosby/Mason card. Any Panini reps checking this board?

My blow dryer post was in reply to upside down stickers 100$ products, and why some people get mad
In this case it's a base card, and doesn't mean much,
