I liked Contenders as well, but I wish you got a jersey or two along with the 4 autos.

In three boxes of artifacts I've pulled 4 patches, and in any break I've seen or been a part of there has been 1 patch card (3 GU + 1 auto) I'd say Artifacts x2 because if you get an Auto Rookie Redemption I you will pay off all of your boxes for awhile ;)

If youre looking for return value, consistency and overall quality (few no name gu players) go with artifacts!

I'm leaning toward Contenders + Artifacts. Is there any glaring negatives to contenders that would stop anyone from buying it?

Or you can go for Ultimate Collection (Upper Deck)

Only 4 cards a box, hit or miss, but sick design and when you hit, oh boy do you hit!

Here's my view on the options you mentioned:

1) 2x 11-12 Artifacts - Great chance for at least 1 patch card. You'd end up with a good amount of tradebait. If you score one of the better RC redemptions (Edm, Col, etc...) you'll be able to turn it around easily.

2) Artifacts + Certified - Just like option 1, you'd get lots of tradebait (at least 18 "hits" in those 2 boxes combined). I've seen boxes of Certified with 4 cards /25 or less, and then some with just 1 /25. Chance at a Freshman Fabrics, which would be the first gu/auto cards for the big rookies.

3) Artifacts + Luxury Suite - Only time I'd ever bust Luxury Suite is at an expo or card show that has redemptions along with it. The only real draw of this product are the stick pieces, which are always nice to pull.

4) Artifacts + Ultimate - A mix of lots of hits (less chance of a total dud box) and high risk (1 big card makes you VERY happy).

Out of these options, I'd go with Artifacts + UD Ultimate, because as a gift, its a lot of fun to have 1 hit/miss to open (Ultimate) and then 10 packs to enjoy opening after. I'd also consider Certified + UD Ultimate for the same reason.

Sorry to bring this up again...but what's the consensus about 10/11 Pinnacle? I'm also considering getting a variety of packs (ex. 3x 10/11 SPX..$24.99, 4 Parkhurst..roughly $20 or 4 artifacts packs...40ish and a couple parkhurst). It's crunch time but I still am undecided.
