Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo has been suspended indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan.
The 26-year-old faces punishment for issuing a dangerous check to Edmonton Oilers forwardTom Gilbert on Monday night.
The Oilers trailed 1-0 when Carcillo launched Gilbert into the boards 7:23 into the second, resulting in a major boarding penalty and a game misconduct. Gilbert had a step on Carcillo when the agitator pushed the defenceman, sending him into the air and into the boards behind the Edmonton goal. Both went down after the hit and had to be helped off the ice.
Gilbert left with a lower-body injury and did not return, while Carcillo appeared to be favouring his left leg and had to be helped off the ice.
Carcillo has been suspended five times since 2008 including twice in 2011, the last of which was a dangerous hit from behind onJoni Pitkanen.
He clearly wasn't going for the puck, and it was excessive. Why does this guy still play in the League?

Because teams keep thinking there's a use for him? I can't imagine why, though.
