Apparently there are a lot of mind readers on this forum. Seriously, the only person who knows whether that was an accident or intentional is Matt Cooke.

It doesn't matter if you're Damien Cox, Greg Wyshynski, or an average fan - this is all just speculation. Totally pointless argument, and all that matters is that Karlsson is hurt.

Yeah, and guy who did this is Matt Cooke. Let's open a poll.. how many months it takes, until the next player is injured in accidentally because of Cooke.
Are you Pens fans then here?

Cooke's skate should not be off the ice like it is. No need to carry your skate off the ice going into the corner. It appears from the video that Cooke is purposely kneeing Karlson in the @$$, absolutely know doubt about it.

As said in another thread only Cooke knows what his intentions were. On the other hand with his track record he will always be guilty first. I think players like Cooke are cheap and deserve the wrath of any Enforcer.

Are you saying that even though people have watched it time and time again in slow motion they don't know the thought process, in real time, of the person they're degrading?

    Hey Harri,

Not at all - my favorite Matt Cooke highlight was the knockout punch he received from Evander Kane, and I'd be happy to see him suffer a taste of his own medicine sometime.

All I'm saying is that in this case, unlike a knee-to-knee blow or elbow to the head, determining intention is difficult. He's not the only player to use his knee to keep an opponent against the boards, and frankly it would take some serious skill in real-time to bring your blade down inside someone's skate.

It would help if they showed his face, to see if he had an evil smile or was laughing maniacally when he did it.

If you turn the volume up really loud you can hear him say "excellent" as he rubs his hands together.

I can understand the perspective being put forward by Senators fans and indeed, ownership, saying that what happened to Karlsson was intentional and that Cooke did it deliberately. When something major happens to your best player that puts him out for the season, and it's done by a guy with a lot of history behind him, the natural inclination is to assume the worst and go out to vilify that individual. I've been there before when it comes to Cooke taking out Markov, and one or two other incidents, and it is interesting to see how differently people react to one scenario where it does involve "their guy" and another scenario where it does not.

Writing off something as a "hockey play" when a severe injury occurs is a sure-fire way to get someone's gander up, that's for sure.

I don't believe that Cooke intended to bring down his skate on Karlsson. The idea of a "distinct downward kicking motion" I feel doesn't hold water - is he bringing his skate down? Yes. Obviously he is doing so in order to regain his balance and get back in the play. Pretty tough to play the game on one leg. It was just very unfortunate that Karlsson's leg happened to be where Cooke's was heading.

There's a lot of things that we can justifiably and credibly say Matt Cooke has done with clear intent to injure - this ain't one of them, IMO.

Maybe the Isles can bring back Trevor Gillies so he can run Cooke like he did Tangradi that brawl of a game.
I collect Matt Dzieduszycki, Derek King, Pierre Turgeon (Isles only), Zigmund Palffy (Isles only) plus specific current Isles (mainly Wahlstrom, Dobson, Barzal, Beauvillier, Pulock)
