the Galchenyuks were on there way down before beckett came out. Yakupov was selling for $20 he has gone up slightly since he is starting to score a little. I don't think beckett affects the price of cards that much. How many people here own a beckett? Not many. A magazine does not tell me what a card is worth and I know lots of people like that. I only have encountered a few people on here that have asked for the BV and care about it.
The main reason that prices are so low is that it was opened more than ever before. So many people opened it and put it on ebay and tried to flip. Some got cards they wanted and don't need to buy off of ebay.Flickr: Hidden Content

Yes it is related and here's why: for many of those that use Beckett--and there are still MANY who do--the standard sale price is "half-book" therefore a $40 card suddenly becomes a $20 sale value card for those who use that instrument. Yes there will be some shop owners who do full book or 2/3 book if it's a star player, but for the general hobbyist that uses Beckett, the "half-book" principle is one still very widely used.
